Dear Michelle,

I remember when I was a young teacher in Boca Raton.  I was invited to assemble a polo team to compete in for a cup at the local club.   I immediately asked my fellow TFA recruit Scooter Nelson to join me and he had a friend who was an outstanding Number One.  Unfortunately, I couldn't scrape together a 4th player and we had to cancel our plans to compete.  I was embarrassed to have been unable to field a whole team.

Recently, I heard that you were forced to cancel your plans to debate Diane Ravitch at Lehigh University on February 6th because you were unable to find a third person for your side.  I am happy to announce that I am willing to join your team.   I believe my resume speaks for themselves, but as the Director of Last Stand for Children First, I've made a name for myself as one of the country's foremost education reformers.  Through Last Stand's Project SLOW we have dropped the number of students in the bottom quartile on state tests in Louisiana from 25% to just over 15%.  Our evaluation plan, which has been

The Legislative Analyst’s Office is projecting that the surplus in the state’s General Fund, assuming there is not a recession in coming years and spending remains relatively flat, will rise from $5.4 billion next year to nearly $10 billion in 2017-18 and then remain level. Source: LAO

From gloom to boom, how quickly thing change. A resurgent economy and recalculations of revenue from the past two years will leave the state budget with a multi-billion dollar surplus next year and K-12 schools and community colleges with unexpected billions more to spend, according to a projection that the Legislative Analyst’s Office released on Tuesday.

“The state’s budgetary condition is stronger than at any time in the past decade,” the LAO concluded in its 2014-15 Fiscal Outlook. “The state’s structural deficit – in which ongoing spending commitments were greater than projected revenues – is no more.”

The LAO’s annual projection is the prologue to the numbers that really count – Gov. Jerry Brown’s 2014-15 budget – which will be released in early January. Nonetheless, it will whet legislators’ appetites to what could be a big food fight over restoring cuts from the recession and creating new programs.

Michael Cohen, Gov. Jerry Brown’s director of finance, immediately sought to temper expectations in a statement to the Sacramento Bee. “The focus must continue to be on paying down the state’s accumulated budgetary debt and maintaining a prudent reserve to ensure that we do not return to the days of $26 billion deficits,” it said.

Brown’s current budget projects a $1.1 billion surplus for the year ending June 30. The LAO predicts that surplus will rise to $5.6 billion at the end of 2014-15, even after factoring in higher spending for K-12 and community colleges demanded by Proposition 98, the voter approved

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri's education commissioner provided advice to a group crafting a ballot proposal that would end tenure protections for public school teachers and instead make their employment contingent on student achievement.

State email records show commissioner Chris Nicastro met with an advocate of the ballot initiative more than a year ago, suggested specific wording and reviewed a final draft of the initiative before it was filed this March with the secretary of state's office.

Nicastro's involvement is detailed in emails released by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in response to a Sunshine Law request filed by the Missouri chapter of the National Education Association. The teachers' union, which opposed the initiative, provided the emails to The Associated Press.

The group said Nicastro's involvement went beyond what was appropriate for a nonpartisan appointee of the State Board of Education.

A jury delivered guilty verdicts today against DeKalb’s former chief operating officer Pat Reid and her ex-husband Tony Pope in a messy case that also involved former Superintendent Crawford Lewis.

Prosecutors say Reid used her position overseeing hundreds of millions of dollars in school construction to help her husband's firm to collect more than $1 million beyond what he was owed. Indicted with Reid and Pope, Lewis pleaded guilty to misdemeanor obstruction for interfering with the investigation that led to the charges.

School district news increasingly takes place in the criminal courts. Today’s verdict concludes the courtroom drama in DeKalb. But there's more yet to come. The next trial will be the 34 APS educators implicated in CRCT cheating. That takes place in the spring.  (The AJC reports that a former elementary schoolteacher today became the first APS defendant to plead guilty.)

The allegations of racketeering and theft-by-taking in DeKalb contributed to the growing public disillusionment with the district, evidenced by the recent effort of seven schools to become the
