Standing Rock
On this Thanksgiving Day, I'm thankful to be standing among so many good people willing to resist the wave of Trumpism sweeping over the land. First and foremost, the Standing Rock water protectors who are baring the brunt of it with power and dignity. We have to continue to stand with them, especially through this difficult winter.

I'm anxious to see what happens when they are joined by hundreds of veterans on Dec. 4th. Wish I could be there for that.

Pres. Obama still has the power to stop DAPL in the last weeks of his term. I hope he finds the courage. But not holding my breath.

I'm still surprised at how many liberal Clinton supporters still believe that Trump is "moderating" and are willing to "give him a chance". I don't know what else he has to do to them to show he's a for-real neo-fascist.

Trump lunches with NYTers.
Case in point... NYT execs and staff held a lunch meeting with Trump in an attempt to find "common ground". The Times has been a favorite target of Trump, a 1st-Amendment denier.

Thomas ("Earth is flat") Friedman left the meeting somewhat assured that Trump was "rethinking" his extreme positions. Ie. on torture, not prosecuting Hillary Clinton, and on environmental issues.

Not having any of it was Mike Klonsky's SmallTalk Blog: Thanksgiving a good day to resist Trumpism:

CURMUDGUCATION: DeVos, the Acton Institutue. and Child Labor:

DeVos, the Acton Institutue. and Child Labor

Now that Betsy DeVos is set to be our next Secretary of Education, we have a few weeks to unpack some of her intriguing associations.

We already know the basics-- DeVos is a rich patron of the GOP establishment, DeVos wants vouchers very badly, and DeVos wants tax dollars to flow freely to white Christian schools. If you want to now what DeVos policies look like in practice, simply look at Detroit, where she has largely gotten her way.

DeVos money is used to support many organizations, some of which are already well-known, but some of which, like the Acton Institute, are not so familiar. But a look at the Acton Institute gives us a good look inside the DeVos mindset.

The Acton Institute was founded in 1990 in Grand Rapis by Fr. Robert A. Sirico and Kris Alan Mauren and was named after Lord Acton (the "absolute power corrupts absolutely"). Their website says their mission is "to promote a free and virtuous society characterized by individual liberty and sustained by religious principles."

Acton is a member of the State Policy Network, the Heritage Foundation's loose collection of right-wing and libertarian thinky tanks,  but unlike some of their strictly political brethren, Acton is all about the religious aspects. While they don't quite rise to the level of "greed is good," they do rise to the level of "capitalism is God's most blessed way of sorting out the world." (My words, not theirs) The Institute puts out several print publications, including Religion & Liberty and the Journal of

Fifteen days ago, we woke up to a new world.
We now have a new and frankly shocking cast of characters heading up all the important political and social initiatives in America. Free-floating rage and casual acts of terror have become commonplace:
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has documented more than 700 incidents of active bigotry since Donald Trump's election; 40 percent of all the incidents occurred in schools. Of these documented incidents, 206 were anti-immigrant, 151 were anti-Black, 80 were anti-gay, 60 were vandalism that involved swastikas, 51 were anti-Muslim, and 36 were attacks on women.
The fact that schools have become a staging ground for active bigotry is not at all surprising to me. Kids always reflect the values they've seen expressed at home and in the media (whether that media is accurate or not). Teachers know this. And they know precisely how to deal with ugly student behaviors, without involving their own political beliefs.
As it happened, I was scheduled to work with young musicians in a public school for three days, immediately following the election. Each day I was there, I saw more teachers wearing safety pins. Each lunchtime discussion was more focused on "how can we all help kids understand that they are safe here?" This was an overwhelmingly white school in a small town, where there were lots of red voters, but teachers' first response was toward dignity, equity and peace for their students.
Now--I understand and appreciate the pushback against safety pins. They're a cheap, adopted response to generations of blatant discrimination. They're too little, too late, too faddish, way too easily co-opted.
On those days, in that context, however--they were a first stab at caring. They were instructional tools.
And guess what? Even feeble-effort safety pins are so scary that they have been banned in at least one school district--not surprisingly, a white suburban district in Kansas.  During the same week that our cherished Bill of Rights permitted this, in the nation's capital.
This might be a hill where teachers are willing to die.
I've written plenty about how teachers have been officially discouraged from any number of things that constitute professional educational practice: crafting their own lessons, interpreting curricular guidelines to fit what they know about children, trusting their own data and observations. Now they're forbidden to act as guardians of children's well-being?
My friends Bruce Baker and Bill Ivey reminded that (in Twitter-speak) "in context of classroom and/or when acting as agent of state/district, teachers lack 1st amendment protection. Point here is that district has authority to regulate curricular speech in this way. Doesn't mean they have to, though. Ideally, teachers and administrators can work together to establish a good, safe environment for all kids, avoid this. Most disturbing, in current political context, expressing messages of human decency seems to qualify as politically divisive speech."
Exactly. When does human decency surpass Don't Rock the Boat school leadership? Aren't these extraordinary times? Aren't the lives of children and the fate of public education at stake?
I am embarrassed to say that the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY), an organization I belong to, which should be a stronghold of unvarnished teacher advocacy, sent around a little memo saying:
For anyone who has worked seriously in policy and advocacy, you know that this work requires deep thought and a chess-player's mentality. In other words, we must constantly ask ourselves, "If I take this action, what will be the result if A occurs or B occurs? What will be the impact of my actions two or three steps down the road?  Will the impact of my action match my intent in making it?" These are serious questions and require deep thoughtful planning. To that end, I would ask that you not post political commentary on the NNSTOY Facebook pages; please keep this to your personal pages.
And while you're at it, keep your safety pins under wraps, OK?
Here's my hope, on this Thanksgiving Day--a day when we are called to pause, as a nation, and be grateful for our abundant blessings.
I hope that schools will once again become a staging ground for re-learning how to behave as if we were, in fact, blessed. As if we had a free and fair government, a vigilant and courageous press and a cornucopia of opportunity for all, not just the economic top tier. As if our clear purpose, as educators, was to build smart citizens and encourage critical thought.

I’m Thankful for Real Public Schools!

thanksgiv-day

With the DeVos selection, I thought I’d tweak and rerun an old Thanksgiving post. Here are a few of the things we should focus on instead of breaking up public schools.
Have a beautiful Thanksgiving! Enjoy your kids.

Thanksgiving can be a lonely time. It can be a time where problems appear worse, when you look around and see other happy people and Thanksgiving for you is marred by illness or loss.
For children, the problems facing adults, that they share, are magnified. Our public schools which accept all children should focus on these things. And they need and deserve well-qualified teachers who make teaching their career.
  • What if, as a child, your parents are unemployed? Poverty affects everything you do.
  • How do you handle Thanksgiving when your loved one is not sitting at the table? Whether temporary or permanent, the loss of a loved one during the holidays is rough.
  • What if you are a child  and I’m Thankful for Real Public Schools!:

This story originally ran in May, 2011. With Betsy DeVos’ recent appointment as Education Secretary in the Trump Administration, we thought now would be a good time to get reacquainted with one of America’s most stealth — and effective — right-wing oligarchies.
Since the 2010 elections, voucher bills have popped up in legislatures around the nation. From Pennsylvania to Indiana to Florida, state governments across the country have introduced bills that would take money from public schools and use it to send students to private and religious institutions.
Vouchers have always been a staple of the right-wing agenda. Like previous efforts, this most recent push for vouchers is led by a network of conservative think tanks, PACs, Religious Right groups and wealthy conservative donors. But “school choice,” as they euphemistically paint vouchers, is merely a means to an end. Their ultimate goal is the total elimination of our public education system.
The decades-long campaign to end public education is propelled by the super-wealthy, right-wing DeVos family. Betsy Prince DeVos is the sister of Erik Prince, founder of the notorious private military contractor Blackwater USA (now Xe), and wife of Dick DeVos, son of the co-founder of Amway, the multi-tiered home products business.
By now, you’ve surely heard of the Koch brothers, whose behind-the-scenes financing of right-wing causes has been widely documented in the past year. The DeVoses have remained largely under the radar, despite the fact that their stealth assault on America’s schools has the potential to do away with public education as we know it.
Right-Wing Privatization Forces
The conservative policy institutes founded beginning in the 1970s get hundreds of millions of dollars from wealthy families and foundations to develop and promote free market fundamentalism. More specifically, their goals include privatizing social security, reducing government regulations, thwarting environmental policy, dismantling unions — and eliminating public schools.
Whatever they may say about giving poor students a leg up, their real priority is nothing short of the total dismantling of our public educational institutions, and they’ve admitted as much. Cato Institute founder Ed Crane and other conservative think tank leaders have signed the Public Proclamation to Separate School and State, which reads in part that signing on, “Announces to the world your commitment to end involvement by local, state, and federal government from education.”
But Americans don’t want their schools dismantled. So privatization advocates have recognized that it’s not politically viable to openly push for full privatization and have resigned themselves to incrementally dismantling public school systems. The think tanks’ weapon of choice is school vouchers.
Vouchers are funded with public school dollars but are used to pay for students to attend private and parochial (religious-affiliated) schools. The idea was introduced in the 1950s by the high priest of free-market fundamentalism, Milton Friedman, who also made the real goal of the voucher movement clear: “Vouchers are not an end in themselves; they are a means to make a transition from a government to a free-market system.” The quote is in a 1995 Cato Institute briefing paper titled “Public Schools: Make Them Private.”
Joseph Bast, president of Heartland Institute, stated in 1997, “Like most other conservatives and libertarians, we see vouchers as a major step toward the complete privatization of schooling. In fact, after careful study, we have come to the conclusion that they are the only way to dismantle the current socialist regime.” Bast added, “Government schools will diminish in enrollment and thus in number as parents shift their loyalty and vouchers to superior-performing private schools.”
But Bast’s lofty goals have not panned out. That’s because, quite simply, voucher programs do not work.
The longest running voucher program in the country is the 20-year-old Milwaukee School Choice Program. Standardized testing shows that the voucher students in private schools perform below the level of Milwaukee’s public school students, and even when socioeconomic status is factored in, the voucher students still score at or below the level of the students who remain in Milwaukee’s public schools. Cleveland’s voucher program has produced similar results. Private schools in the voucher program range from excellent to very poor. In some, less than 20 percent of students reach basic proficiency levels in math and reading.
Most Americans do not want their tax dollars to fund private and sectarian schools. Since 1966, 24 of 25 voucher initiatives have been defeated by voters, most by huge margins. Nevertheless, the pro-privatization battle continues, organized by an array of 527s, 501(c)(3)s, 501(c)(4)s, and political action committees. At the helm of this interconnected network is Betsy DeVos, the four-star general of the pro-voucher movement.
The DeVos Family Campaign for Privatization of Schools
The DeVoses are top contributors to the Republican Party and have provided the funding for major Religious Right organizations. And they spent millions of their own fortune promoting the failed voucher initiative in Michigan in 2000, dramatically outspending their opposition. Sixty-eight percent of Michigan voters rejected the Meet the DeVos family — super-wealthy right-wingers working with the religious right to destroy public education:
