      As Wall Street’s corrupt influence on the economy has grown, the corporate ownership of our food system has hurt the health and livelihood’s of some of our most vulnerable communities. This Sunday, December 4th food justice activists and occupiers will be traveling from as far as Colorado, Iowa, Maine and Upstate New York to join together for the Occupy Wall Street FARMERS’ MARCH.Through a day of dialogue, musical performances, and a march, farmers and their urban allies working for food justice in their communities will form alliances to fight and expose corporate control of the food supply.

      Events throughout the day will call and inspire participants to fight against the corporate manipulation of the agriculture system. An industry that is responsible for using chemical toxins tied to soaring obesity rates, heart disease and diabetes and limiting access to affordable, wholesome food to the country’s poorest citizens.

      New York State Teacher Centers are not only back up and running, but thriving in an atmosphere of renewed appreciation for their work on behalf of students and classroom instructors, NYSUT Vice President Maria Neira told a recent gathering of more than 100 Teacher Center directors.

      "I know that this room is filled with optimists ready to seize the opportunities ahead of us," Neira told the group. "We know the relevant work of the Teacher Centers, and we will continue to show the evidence of that work through our commitment to all students in New York state."

      The Washington Education Association’s political action committee board is interviewing US Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA, 1) and Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna—the Democratic and Republican 2012 candidates for governor, respectively—tomorrow. Inslee will go first at 11 am and McKenna will follow him at 1:30 (with live Twitter and Facebook updates).
      Even though McKenna has madeeducation and education funding the focal point of his campaign, we can’t imagine the WEA will endorse him.
      The WEA will announce its endorsement—the earliest they’ve ever taken a position on a governor’s race—at 3:30.
      Even though McKenna has made education and education funding the focal point of his campaign, we can’t imagine the WEA will endorse him.  McKenna is also  pushing an Arne Duncan agenda (charter schools and tying teacher evaluations to student test scores), which the WEA has fought against in Olympia. Additionally, the National Education Association, the national teachers’ union, is one of Inslee’s top 10 all-time donors, having given him $58,000 since he was first elected in 1992. The WEA has never contributed to McKenna.

      School-zone-stop-225x300A couple of days ago on a Souther California Public Radio station talk show, two longtime education reform allies, LAUSD superintendent John Deasy and former LAUSD board member Yolie Flores, got into their first public disagreement. There with UTLA head Warren Fletcher to discuss the proposed new UTLA / LAUSD agreement, Deasy and Flores disagreed over whether the proposed deal would gut the accountability and competition elements that were key to 2009 Flores' Public School Choice initiative, a two year-old program that gave low performing schools over to new groups including outside charter organizations.
      Deasy, UTLA, E4E, Randi Weingarten, and others have lined up behind the deal. Charter organizations, some LA teachers, and reformers including Ben Austin and Mike McGalliard have criticized it sharply. (See previous post for news coverage and comments.) While Deasy says his deal retains PSC, Flores told me in an interview last night that the deal "completely undercuts" PSC. "It eradicates the entire intent and purpose of PSC which is to use

      Is it going to be called a Parent’s Union bill? From Fort Myers News-Press reporter Chris Umpierre:
      Gov. Rick Scott’s draft legislative agenda includes a bill that would allow parents to close struggling schools and replace them with a charter school. The so-called parent trigger bill, which has yet to be filed in the Florida Legislature, creates a parents union that advocates say will provide powerful and needed counterweight to teachers unions and district bureaucracies. If 51 percent of parents in a persistently failing school sign a petition, they could force the school to change into a charter, close or replace the principal and teachers.
      Similar legislation has passed in California, Texas, Ohio and Connecticut and is being considered in almost a dozen more states. Bill opponents argue that parents lack the expertise to make important policy decisions better left to career educators.

      Ensuring a high-quality physical education program is important. Equally important is ensuring that students are active across the school day and not just in gym class. Research shows that kids who are physically active are not only healthier, but also likely to perform better academically; and short activity breaks during the school day can improve concentration and behavior and enhance learning.

      In short, school-based physical activity is valuable exercise. It aids cognitive development; increases engagement and motivation; and is essential to keeping kids healthy and engaged, as well as safe, supported, and challenged. In November we looked at new ways to encourage movement and how schools are bringing physical activity out of the gym and into the classroom.
