    Hold Will Weatherford Accountable

There’s no surprise that Florida’s republican legislators will be expanding the privatization of education in the next legislative session. No state is moving toward privatization faster than Florida. In this space here yesterday I reported that Rick Scott intends to advance Parent Trigger legislation – warts and all. GRADEBOOK’s Jeffrey Solochek reports that the legislature will be looking to expand the state’s corporate tax credit. Solochek interviewed House-speaker-in waiting Will Weatherford:

They did it last year. And there’s talk that Florida lawmakers might do it again.

“There may be an opportunity to expand the corporate tax scholarship fund,” said House speaker-in-waiting Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel.

The demand is proven, he told the Gradebook.

“There’s still a waiting list” of students requesting the vouchers, he said. “There’s still a cap on the

NPR is reporting that nearly three-quarters of states fail at teaching the civil rights movement, according to a study released by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Nine of the 12 highest-scoring states are from the former Confederacy. They are joined by the states of Illinois, Maryland, and New York.

Generally speaking, the farther away from the South -- and the smaller the African-American population --

Police have arrested over 700 Occupy Wall Street protesters who occupied the Brooklyn Bridge and shut down traffic for hours. Many protesters complained that police had tricked them into moving in front of traffic instead of staying on the side of the street in order to arrest them.

The Occupy Wall Street protests may not have a coherent agenda yet, but these arrests illustrate the fact that they are growing in strength, numbers, and momentum. That the NYPD felt obliged to arrest close one thousand protesters reveals a nervousness that wasn’t there before. This is the sort of action police usually take during a
