Most sitting school board members talk up how the school district has improved on their watch. Not John de Beck. As he campaigns for another four years on the board, de Beck sounds more like an upstart, complaining that San Diego Unified hasn't tackled its biggest problems.

His frank talk has won de Beck fans and a reputation as a politician who says what he thinks, like it or not. He raises prickly questions and grills school district staff, even when it comes to ideas he likes.

Poverty and education

Kevin Carey has a great post on the intersection of poverty and education. He starts with University of Colorado Education Professor Kevin Welner Answer Sheet critique of the education manifesto by the superintendants of the New York City, Washington, DC, Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, Denver, Philadelphia, Kansas City, New Orleans, Charlotte, and Indianapolis schools systems. “Welner believes that by asserting that poor children can learn, the superintendents are hurting the cause of

Misinformation has gotten a pass this election year, giving way to the media favored mindless debates about death panels and government run health care, neither of which is real.

Jack Black nails it in this parody.

Creepy PayPal Zillionaire Is Paying Teens to Drop Out of College

Peter Thiel made billions from PayPal and Facebook, and now he’s out to change the world.

The radical libertarian Thiel has given up on democracy — that experiment went south when women got the vote, he says — and is investing heavily on space exploration and ocean-surface homesteading in hopes of escaping the rabble. Really.

But while those projects — like his interest in life extension and cryogenics — are nutty but mostly harmless, his latest venture is deeply pathological. He’s leading up a group of investors in the Thiel Fellowships, a program

Seven Social and Character Development programs had no impact

The Institute of Education Sciences announces the release of a report, Efficacy of Schoolwide Programs to Promote Social and Character Development and Reduce Problem Behavior in Elementary School Children and the data from a study on the impacts of social and character development (SACD) programs on primary school students. Under the Social and Character Development Research Program seven research teams received funding through a peer reviewed competitive application process from the National Center for Education Research (NCER) in the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) and the Division of Violence Prevention in the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to evaluate one SACD program of their choosing under an experimental design. Schools were randomly assigned to implement one of the seven SACD programs for three years (the treatment group) or continue with their traditional SACD

City banks on new leadership to transform a Brooklyn school

This school year, GothamSchools and WNYC reporters will follow three New York City high schools as they try to improve. The following is an introduction to one of those schools: William E. Grady Career and Technical Education High School.

gradyFor years, Brooklyn’s William E. Grady Career and Technical Education High School struggled to break free from its reputation as simply a trade school.

“The ‘vocational school’ stigma continues to be a deterrent to students who see themselves as college bound,” the school’s leadership team wrote in its educational plan for the 2008-09 school year. Staff laid out strategies to make the school more challenging — and posted some gains — but the school continued to limp academically.

Monday Churn: Mix housing, fix schools?

Daily Churn logoWhat’s churning:

A report issued last week by the Century Foundation has people buzzing in national policy circles. The report,“Housing Policy is School Policy” examines the progress made by low-income students in Montgomery County, Md.’s largely affluent public schools. The foundation, long a champion of socio-economic school integration, presents Montgomery County as a model of school reform because of its strong inclusionary zoning law. That law sets aside 12 to 15 percent of units in large developments for low-income and working-class families.
