It’s day three of Jenaveve Cardenas’ educational career and the four-year-old clings to her mother’s leg, sobbing.
Cardenas attends the Head Start program at Washington Elementary in Pomona. Her mother, Magdalena Simpson, wiped her daughter’s tears and promised she’d be back soon.
Outside the classroom, Simpson laughs: “She’s crying, but I’m just glad she got a place in the class!”
Like most Head Start providers, Pomona Unified has had to make tough choices to deal with the 5.27 percent across-the-board sequester cuts handed down by the federal government.
Across California, more than 5,000 three- and four-year-olds don’t have a seat in a Head Start preschool this year. Nationwide, according to the Obama Administration, 57,200 children will miss out.
Keesha Woods, who runs Head Start programming for the Los Angeles County Office of Education, said parents are panicked.
One mother called her office and said: “I was depending on my three year old getting in, so now I’m going to have to quit my job,” Woods recalls.
Even after losing 900 slots, almost 21,000 children receive will receive free Head Start programs through the county office.
She said many providers have trimmed administrative staff to preserve as many seats

That is the question for the UFT. With apologies to the Immortal Bard:

Was it a good idea for the UFT to endorse Thompson when it did? At the time, I thought so. It appeared Quinn was a 500-pound gorilla, Wiener was poised to enable yet another GOP win, and that de Blasio and Liu were swirling the bowl. 

But when Carlos Danger did his amazing self-destruction routine, it looked like de Blasio had a chance. Unlike Thompson, de Blasio had never told the Daily News he approved of Bloomberg giving all city workers, except teachers, an 8% raise. Considering that, Thompson's ties to Meryl Tisch, and his flip-flopping on stop and frisk, I declined to work for Thompson against de Blasio.

One of the arguments the UFT rep imploring me to work for Thompson offered was that one could not simply look at the polls. One must look deeply. After all, Thompson was sorely underestimated in the polls four years ago. This was certainly true. I can't help but recall another UFT rep telling me we could only move the polls five points, and that's why we weren't endorsing Thompson against Emperor Bloomberg. Months later, when Thompson lost by precisely five points, a more senior UFT official informed us we could only have moved the needle three points.

I began to thing the UFT did not look so deeply at polls either. And this leads me to wonder whether, given the

Investigation of Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Miles incomplete, written report expected after Labor Day

An investigation into Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Miles’ handling of a contract award is incomplete and a written report is expected after Labor Day, board President Eric Cowan said Thursday.
Dallas school trustees spent nearly three hours in closed session receiving a verbal report on findings by independent investigator Paul Coggins, a former U.S. Attorney hired by trustees after concerns emerged that Miles had interfered with an internal investigation.
Cowan said no statement would be made while the investigation was ongoing.
Trustees had unanimously approved Coggins’ hiring on July 22 with costs not to exceed $100,000. He was to complete the work within 30 days.
Rebecca Rodriguez, former DISD communications chief, brought concerns about the contract process for parent education services to district investigators. She alleged that Miles interfered with the contract process in favor of a specific vendor and bullied her. Her department was overseeing the proposal.
Rodriguez abruptly resigned after 3 ½ months on the job and received four months of severance pay and benefits. A settlement agreement has kept her from speaking publicly on the allegations.
Miles has denied Rodriguez’s allegations. He has said in a statement that it’s his “responsibility to

Key education bills await action as session deadline looms | EdSource Today:


Whatever education bills the Legislature passes in the next four weeks will pale in importance compared to its monumental achievement of 2013, the Local Control Funding Formula, Gov. Jerry Brown’s sweeping school finance and accountability plan that legislators enacted as part of the state budget in June.
But key bills do await action, as legislators head toward the end of session on Sept. 13. Chief among them is a decision on what state standardized tests to discontinue this year, which to suspend and resume later, and which to continue. The proposed changes are in Assembly Bill 484, which Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla, D-Concord, is sponsoring on behalf of State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.
California’s adoption of the Common Core State Standards and new English Language Development Standards for English learners and likely adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards by the State Board of Education in November are prompting a more comprehensive look at assessments. The new Common Core tests will be introduced in spring 2015, replacing California Standards Tests in English language arts and math in grades 3-8 and 11. Torlakson has proposed suspending many state tests in order to save money and allow schools to focus their attention on the new standards. Legislators must decide what to do in the future with end-of-subject high school tests, and when to create new tests for English learners and students with disabilities
