Motion to Cancel TFA Contract

This evening the Board Curriculum and Instruction Committee met as a committee of the whole. Five board members were in attendance. A majority of them want a motion to terminate the district's contract with Teach for America. The motion will appear as an introduction item at the March 7 board meeting and as an action item at the March 21 board meeting. The deadline for terminating the contract for next year is April 1.



If the contract is terminated the six Teach for America corps members who were hired this year will continue as teachers for at least another year. After that, they will continue as teachers only if they have acquired their certification. Of course the teachers can resign at any time if they so choose.

A joint campaign by U-T San Diego and United Way of San Diego County to sign up 4,500 volunteers to work with K-12 students is at the halfway point and on target.

Organizers say more than 2,000 people have pledged to volunteer as readers, tutors and mentors to help in local schools since September.

“It is a wonderful outpouring of interest,” said Karen Sprigle, senior vice president and chief administrative officer at United Way of San Diego County. “People wanted to get involved and get engaged. People are really hearing about it and responding to the call.”

I have worked in collaboration with the Clay Studio for many years in order to provide access to the clay arts to the children who attended General George G. Meade Elementary School. I have greatly valued this partnership.

I am an educator who believes that children learn best when they are doing. This is a belief I hold in common with the Clay Studio organization. I love how the many clay artists working with my Meade children over the years have always put learning into the hands of the children. I most appreciate how they have helped our children to realize that they can be involved in shaping and influencing the world around them through the art they choose to create.

For millions of people, adult education classes represent the best hope of improving their lives, offering a second chance at building basic knowledge and more.

Earlier this week, so many people showed up to oppose plans to eliminate an adult education program in the Los Angeles Unified School District that hundreds were turned away from the Board of Education's meeting.

As the LA Weekly reported, the program was granted a temporary reprieve after testimony from a wide range of individuals who said adult education classes were essential to their becoming successful members of the community. The list included an Iraq War veteran, a woman working as a civil engineer who is headed to a doctoral program at UCLA, and a Nigerian immigrant who now works as an adjunct professor in the state

Michelle Rhee and her husband Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson appeared on Wednesday night at the R.F. Kennedy Learning Center. In this carefully orchestrated event Rhee gave a data rich presentation that clearly showed a public education in longstanding corruption and dysfunction.
