Jersey Jazzman: Poverty, Shmoverty! Part II

Jersey Jazzman: Poverty, Shmoverty! Part II:

Poverty, Shmoverty! Part II

As I said before, Amanda Ripley misstated Diane Ravitch's claims about international comparisons of poverty; she doesn't seem to understand a low-poverty district still has poor kids, so it and others like it can be compared to a low-poverty country, which also has poor kids.

But Ripley also has a problem with how the US traditionally defines children in poverty:
The free/reduced-price lunch figure measures the number of kids from families making 185% of federal poverty line, right? So that means a family of 4 needs to make less than about $40,000 to qualify. Under this measure, roughly 40% of American kids qualify as “poor.”
OK. Then the other measure is the measure usually used in international comparisons of poverty. That is the percentage of kids from families earning less than 50% of the median

Poverty, Shmoverty!

I came across this post by Amanda Ripley in my reformy-type blog travels; she is taking on Diane Ravitch's claim that the USA's relatively poor showing in international test comparisons can be blamed, in large part, on poverty:
Ravitch’s claim can be traced back to a small table on page 15 of a government report that broke down the PISA results based on the percentage of kids who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. When you do that, you see that kids at U.S. schools where less than 10% of the students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch score on average very high—indeed higher than the average for, say, Finland.
But then she makes the magical leap. She says that since Finland has less than 10% poverty,

Happy 20,000 Blue Jersey!

Blue Jersey just posted its 20,000th diary, a remarkable accomplishment. Let me be the first to say congratulations!

I've been writing at BJ for a while now, but haven't really played up my connection, which is a mistake on my part. Being a part of the community at BJ has really helped me sharpen my writing and strengthen my political chops. BJ has a great stable of featured writers, and the regular diarists and commenters are a smart, savvy set.

Blue Jersey would be nothing were it not for Rosi Efthim, a true force of nature. Her tireless work has made the

Van Morrison – “Too Many Myths” (click to listen or download)

The discussion around the Madison Preparatory Academy (MPA) proposal and the related events and processes has been heated, but not always grounded in reality. Many have said that just having this conversation is a good thing. I don’t agree. With myths being so prevalent and prominent, a productive conversation is nearly impossible. Since the vote is scheduled for Monday (12/19), I thought it would be good to take a closer — fact based, but opinionated — look at some of the myths. This is part one, the first set.

Three things to get out of the way first.

One is that the meeting is now scheduled to be held at 6:00 Pm at the Memorial High School Auditorium and that for this meeting the sign up period to speak will be from 5:45 to 6:00 PM (only).

Second is that much of the information on Madison Prep can be found at the district web page devoted to the

TEACHER TEMPERATE SCALE
by alkleen
News item: A Chicago area science teacher resigned after allegedly spraying two students with Lysol when they refused to put on their goggles at the beginning of an experiment. Another example of a teacher who clearly didn’t have the control of their emotions as every teacher must.

There must be a way to weed out potential teachers who clearly don’t have the personality type to maintain control of their emotions no matter what might happen in their classroom. I have devised the TTS (Teacher Temperate Scale), a rating system that should give a clear picture of which potential teachers will be emotionally acceptable, and which ones do not have the self-control needed to handle any classroom situation.

The following scenarios and questions comprise the TTS:

1. A particularly defiant student in your classroom refuses to stop humming out loud. Do you : A. Take off your shoe and sock, and proceed to shove your sock in his mouth? B. Grab the duct tape from your desk drawer and

The “Accountability Plateau” | LFA: Join The Conversation - Public School Insights

The “Accountability Plateau”

Have we hit a plateau in student achievement in this nation? In a paper released today, Mark Schneider suggests that yes, we have.
Schneider was asked to study student achievement in Texas over the past few years, at the time their Governor Rick Perry was a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. Education Secretary Arne Duncan had suggested that Perry ran an inadequate school system, and the Fordham Institute wanted to determine whether or not that was true.
As Schneider reviews, Texas’ performance on the National

The Florida Legislatures Own Research Arm Warned of Potential Charter School Fraud in 2000 | Scathing Purple Musings

The Florida Legislatures Own Research Arm Warned of Potential Charter School Fraud in 2000 | Scathing Purple Musings:

The Florida Legislatures Own Research Arm Warned of Potential Charter School Fraud in 2000

Wring in the Miami Herald this morning, Fred Grim reminds readers that a legislative arm – as far back as 2000 – warned  that “numerous news articles questioning alleged conflicts of interest between  governing board members and charter school operations.”
Anyone who has spent time observing government entities knows what can happen  when large amounts of taxpayer money gets disbursed without transparency or  tough rules or real oversight. Predictable stuff. Anyone could see what’s  coming.
Certainly, the Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government  Accountability, the research arm of the Florida Legislature, foresaw the  hazards. In 2000, back when the state had only 113 charters schools, OPPAGA  issued a report concerned with unseemly expenditures and “business

Jeb Bush, K12 Inc. the Digital Learning Council and Florida Virtual School

At some point Jeb Bush will begin to be seen as what he truly is: a lobbyist and rainmaker for powerful education corporations. His so-called education summit earlier this fall read more like a sales seminar. The only professional educators and public school advocates around were outside protesting. But it is within the list ofBush’s foundation’s financial backers  that introduces  the topic of today’s post.
On-line education giant K12 Inc. is one of Bush’s corporate sponsors. A comprehensive New York Times report last weekend detailed K12 Inc.’s vast reach into the nation’s schools that isn’t so positive.
The business taps into a formidable coalition of private groups and officials promoting nontraditional forms of public education. The growth of for-profit online schools, one of the more overtly commercial segments of the school choice movement, is rooted in the theory that corporate
