To kick off the Administration's focus on Hispanic education as a part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will engage with the Latino community through a virtual town hall at 2:30 p.m. ET on Monday, Oct. 3. The town hall will be moderated by Juan Sepúlveda, the executive director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. Duncan and Sepúlveda will discuss how Hispanic success in education is important to America's economy and respond to questions submitted on Twitter.

The town hall will be streamed live online at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/education-department. Twitter users can ask questions in advance and during the forum using the hashtag #HispanicED. Community leaders and media representatives will help flag questions through retweets on Twitter.

Carmel Martin, the U.S. Department of Education’s assistant secretary for planning, evaluation and policy development will host a Twitter chat on Wednesday, October 5, from 4-5 PM EDT to answer questions about the Obama Administration’s recent announcement that states can get relief from provisions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), commonly known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The event will also be broadcast live on ED’s ustream channel.

The new flexibility supports local and state education reform across the country in exchange for serious state-led efforts to close achievement gaps, promote rigorous accountability, and ensure that all students are on track to graduate college- and career-ready. Likely not a word ever preferred in an educational setting, but the description the Southern Poverty Law Center found appropriate to assess the state of education about the civil rights movement in the U.S.

Findings from a study -- "Teaching the Movement: The State of Civil Rights Education 2011" -- released this week by the SPLC's Teaching Tolerance program show that nearly three-quarters of states fail at teaching the civil rights movement. An indicator: just 2 percent of high school seniors in 2010 could fully answer a basic question about the Supreme Court's landmark decision in the historic Brown v. Board of Education case.

Two of our favorite subjects -- FLOTUS and Target -- collided today, when Michelle Obama headed to the cheap-chic chain's Alexandria, Va. outpost for some retail therapy.

The first lady wore a floral shirt and lemon-hued tank, putting a sporty spin on the casual-cool ensemble with a Nike baseball cap. Judging by the two shopping bags she's toting, it looks as if she had a successful visit.

While Michelle's known to support high-end designers like Jason Wu, she's also given to stepping out in fast fashion. (Here she is in a Target frock two summers ago.)
