    DENVER (AP) — A Denver judge blocked Colorado’s first school voucher program
    Friday, calling the program to give parents in the state’s wealthiest county
    checks for tuition at religious schools a “substantial disservice to the public
    interest.”

    Denver District Judge Michael Martinez sided with a group of parents, the
    American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado and the group Americans United for
    Separation of Church and State. They asked for an injunction blocking the
    “Choice Scholarship Pilot Program” in Douglas County.

    The voucher opponents argued the program violates the separation of church

Jerry Brown’s veto of $2.1 million for the development a statewide database onteachers – CALTIDES – apparently ticked off U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, pleased the California Teachers Assn., and puzzled just about everyone else in education, who are left wondering, “Just what does Jerry want?”

    HELENA, Mont. — As hundreds of schools here and across the nation faced being labeled failures under the federal No Child Left Behindlaw, Montana education officials defiantly informed Washington this spring that they would stop raising testing targets as the law requires, despite warnings that doing so could cost the state millions of dollars in federal aid.

    Denise Juneau, Montana's education chief, wrote a defiant letter to Washington.

    But in an agreement to be announced here on Monday, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will allow Montana to keep most of the schools off the law’s blacklist, and the state will pay no penalty.

    The U.S. Department of Justice and attorneys general in four states, including California, filed a complaint last week against for-profit college giant Education Management Corp., which operates 14 campuses in the state under the Argosy University and Art Institute brands.

    The 122-page complaint contends the Pittsburgh-based for-profit college company illegally paid admissions


    State at risk of forfeiting millions in education stimulus

    California is at risk of losing millions in education stimulus funds because the recipients have been too slow in spending the money.

    Six of nine stimulus grants are on pace to miss the Sept. 30 and Dec. 31 spending deadlines set by the federal government, according to a Bureau of State Audits report released last week.

    The money in jeopardy includes aid to schools serving minorities and the poor and set-asides to help struggling

    Well, it's off to school. Let me tell you, going to bed at 9 PM required all kinds of willpower and creativity.

    I have only two comments this morning. First, over at Capitol Fax, Ty Fahner has clarified something that was previously murky:

    “The Civic Committee and I are still trying to push 512,” he said Friday. “Putting it bluntly, they are the legislators. They tell me what’s going on, I give them suggestions.
    Putting it bluntly? As if it were some kind of kabbalistic revelation. They're definitely going to try to push that moronic SB512, the pension-destruction-through-cascading-dropout program. It's time to start faxing, people.

    In writing about a new science Framework in the previous two posts, I came across Tina Barseghian‘s enthusiastic blog about how “technology has redefined teaching” science and math in linking school academics to the real world. Teaching and learning school science with digital software is changing before our eyes. Yet anyone in school work over the age of 35 has heard before such glowing accounts with earlier innovative technologies. So a question hangs in the air: how come those classroom reforms of yesteryear that included the latest technologies seldom survived and subsequent generations of reformers had to innovate again and again?
