    New dropout formula, same problem

Thursday, August 11th, 2011 at 6:47 pm in dropoutsNo Comments

California’s new dropout and graduate estimates are out for the Class of 2010. They are supposed to be more accurate than ever before, as this is the fourth year the state education department has used unique student IDs to track students’ progress through the system.

With four years of data, it didn’t have to make all kinds of crazy projections and extrapolations to guess how many kids were quitting school. It’s basic division — a calculation simple enough for a fifth-grader (or a journalist

LEARNING MUST BE FUN, NOT WORK

My son was telling me of an incident in one of his graduate education classes. The professor was emphasising how important it was that all learning be fun. The students were all in agreement and nodded approvingly as the professor spoke. My son raised his hand and asked a question. He wanted to know why it was wrong to expect hard work to be a part of learning. The class and professor looked at him in disbelief.

Yes, our elementary and junior highs are now centers of fun and not work. I have mentioned before how many districts have outlawed rote memorization. Teaching styles that actually depended on the students to provide most of the work are long gone. It’s amazing that our current crop of teachers are so talented as to almost always make learning fun. I tip my hat to them, I know how much planning and work it is for the teachers to make sure their lessons are appealing and fun for the students.

I would suggest we start to rename some of the old and tired terms to meet the new standards of fun in learning.

How Big Urban Districts Can Succeed, Part III

Here is the third element that big urban districts need to succeed: They must passionately use data to drive their decisions.

Superintendents, principals, teachers, and, yes, parents need easy access to data that shows them how either a campus, teacher or student is performing. And not just last year, last semester or last month, but now.

Former Dallas Superintendent Michael Hinojosa was passionate about using data. He would have spreadsheets in his office that guided him about what was going on across the district.

Dallas also had new data options for parents to use. The district has started rolling out "parent portals" that give families real time data about how their child is doing in a class, and even whether they showed up for school that day.

Advances in cognitive science have made it possible to pinpoint how these disadvantages hinder children academically. One-fifth of the middle schoolers in Providence, Rhode Island, for example, entered kindergarten in 2003 suffering from some level of lead poisoning, which disproportionately affects the poor and is associated with intellectual delays and behavioral problems such as ADHD. “It is now understood that there is no safe level of lead in the human body,” writes education researcher David Berliner, “and that lead at any level has an impact on IQ.”

Food insecurity is similarly correlated with cognitive delays, and rising in incidence across the

How much do some private school heads earn? A bundle

Some heads of elite private schools in the greater Washington area and elsewhere in the country are earning more than a half-million dollars in combined salary and other perks, according to tax forms the schools file with the federal government. The head of an Alexandria boarding school earned more than $630,000 in 2009-10.

Most private schools are, of course, not elite and the people who run them don’t make anywhere near these kinds of salaries. Neither, on average, do public school superintendents.

Are 21st century 5-year-olds cognitively ready to read?

This was written by Elfrieda (Freddy) H. Hiebert , president/CEO of TextProject, a not-for-profit aimed at increasing student-reading levels through appropriate texts. She is also a research associate at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Here, Hiebert analyzes the explicit and implicit assumptions within the Common Core State Standards regarding formal reading instruction in kindergarten: the dumbing down of kindergarten texts and the pushing down of reading instruction to kindergarten.

Great Teachers Focus on Education, Not Tests.

Great Teachers Focus on Education, Not Tests.

A few years ago I taught a class of fourth- and fifth-graders in order to give the teachers some time to plan together. It was the easiest and best teaching I ever did, and a great example of how a great teacher doesn’t do it themselves but rather creates the conditions for the students to do it.

Each week the students had to learn nine words. The teacher gave them the words on Monday. They looked them up, learned the definitions, and used them in sentences. They came to know these words—in some cases intimately—as they discussed their different meanings in class and the different roles they can play in a sentence, so that by Thursday, when I taught the class, they had each written a story using all nine words.

I presided, as they took turns standing in the center of the room—each one poised and proud—reading their

    Corporate "Reformers" Get Corporate Salaries

I asked earlier today what the salaries were for the corporate "reformers" - you know, the ones who want to radically change teacher compensation systems.

In the comments, Ken pointed me toward guidestar.org. It's a site where you can get IRS forms from a wide variety of non-profits (you have to remember folks: I'm just an amateur, and I'm learning as I go. So any time any of you can send me in the right direction, I really appreciate it - thanks, Ken!).

Part of IRS reporting includes compensation for top officers. But you can only get this data if the organization has been around long enough to have filed a 990. Michelle Rhee's Students First and Derrell Bradford's B4K haven't had to file yet, so we don't know what they make. However...

The average yearly teacher salary is around $55,000. So, if we use my previous list, we can figure out how much
