    A Brooklyn high school co-founded by Borough President Marty Markowitz is one of the most dangerous places to learn, a new Education Department survey shows.

    Students at the Brooklyn Academy of Global Finance in Bedford-Stuyvesant face routine bullying, gang activity and a generally unsafe campus, according to the city's 2011 School Survey.

    "The kids run wild, and the teachers are scared," said an administrator at the high school who asked to remain anonymous.

    "It's like there are no rules here at all," she added.

    Only half of parents of students at the school feel their child is safe, and 41% said

    We probably don’t need a lot more evidence that what passes for democracy in America has gone badly awry. But a quick look at the 16 measures that have been proposed so far for next year’s California ballot should strengthen the case just a bit more.

    That it’s occurring just as we approach this October’s centennial of California’s adoption of the initiative, referendum and recall, makes the case especially ironic.

    “The money changers—the legions of Mammon and of Satan,” wrote C.K. McClatchy, the editor of the Sacramento Bee, in 1911 after Californians voted what’s now called “direct democracy” into the state constitution. “These have been lashed out of the temple of the people.”

    Like McClatchy, Gov. Hiram Johnson, who had been elected the prior year, was a Progressive who was convinced that the initiative and referendum, which he championed, would immunize California against the corruption and general misgovernment that had long afflicted his state.

    As the D.C. schools reform effort launched in 2007 by former chancellor Michelle Rhee enters its fifth year, newly released test scores (Rhee’s chosen measure of progress in closing the achievement gap) still show huge gaps between schools in the city’s poorest and wealthiest neighborhoods.

    Is anybody surprised?

    In this story about the continuing achievement gap, my colleague Bill Turque wrote that children in the poorest schools (in Ward 7 and 8) trailed students in the wealthiest (in Ward 3) in reading and math pass rates from 41 to 56 percentage points on this year’s D.C. Comprehensive Assessment System exams (which are given annually to students in grades 3 through 8 and 10).

    I ask this question for a simple reason. It seems that value that drives the other side in our political debate is money. It is a mentality that I heard often in the 80s, you know, the period when LifeStyles of the Rich and Famous was considered by some 'must watch TV.' It is the mindset that gave rise to the expression also common in that period that "he who dies with the most toys wins."

    It is a mindset that measures and values everything solely by some artificial economic standard.

    It means those who make more are automatically more important than those who do the work that enables them to live comfortably. Thus lawyers in private practice are more valuable than those in government service - except
