It was a complete honor to be a part of Mexico City’s first international conference on bullying earlier this week. Bringing together speakers from around the world—including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Spain—the Congreso Internacional de Bullying was hosted by the office of Mexico City’s Secretary of Education, Maestro (Mtro.) Mario Delgado Carrillo.

As the opening speaker, I shared the context of some of the most tragic bullying stories the U.S. has endured these last few years, especially in the form of bullycides, which is the preferred term when referring to suicides that have resulted from bullying. Stories such as those of Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, Phoebe Prince, and Tyler Clementi, have catapulted us into an even more pressing era for making change in our schools.

Layoff update and Oakland teachers of the year

May 15 is upon us, and it doesn’t look like the Oakland school district plans to rescind any more layoff notices of teachers and counselors than it already has. (See my April layoff update here.)

Here is the latest layoff resolution, which the board votes on tomorrow night.

On a happier note, one of the pink-slipped teachers I wrote about, Lissette Averhoff, will be honored tomorrow as one of the two Oakland teachers of the year. Lissette has informed me that she will be back at ACORN Woodland Elementary in the fall.

The other Oakland teacher of the year honoree is Lisa Hiltbrand, from Urban

Parents can now take to the Web to fight teacher layoffs.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio launches a website Wednesday that allows parents to send messages directly to the Education Department - and even record testimonials about teachers who have changed their children's lives.

The Save Our Teachers website - http://advocate.nyc.gov/saveourteachers - is meant to connect parents who oppose the 4,100 layoffs announced by Mayor Bloomberg to stave off the city's budget crisis.

De Blasio said he thought the layoffs "would set back education in the city for years."

"Parents have a say here," he argued. "They get to make a decision through their activism. The more involved they get, the more impact they can have."

Parents can submit written appreciations or sign up to create video testimonials about

Education Bill Fight Puts Spotlight on Union Chief

As legislators prepared to move a sweeping overhaul of state education law through the Illinois House this week, the Chicago Teachers Union’s sudden turnabout on the bill is raising questions about the union’s role in negotiations and the leadership ability of its untested leader, Karen Lewis.

When the education bill passed the Illinois Senate unanimously last month, the support of the states’ teachers unions seemed to signal an unprecedented, collaborative effort to reform education policy. Lewis and the leaders of the state’s other two major teachers’ unions had agreed to substantial changes on tenure, evaluations and bargaining procedures. But last Wednesday the Chicago Teachers Union membership voted to consider pulling its support, claiming that language curbing collective bargaining rights was inserted into the bill without its knowledge and amounted to an “atomic bomb.”

I hardly ever met any movie stars in my 6th grade at Orchard Elementary in West Valley City, Utah where I taught a generation of girls and boys. But I saw movie stars and TV stars, directors and script writers the other night at a function sponsored by the Creative Coalition, the National Education Association and professional wrestlers. Seriously.

And the topic was very serious. It would have to be to bring together such a diverse group. The topic: Keeping kids safe from bullies. As I was explaining the tremendous interest educators were getting on this issue, a fairly jaded friend of mine remarked that this was simply the “fashionable” cause of the moment.

She’s wrong. I know she’s wrong because I talked to the writer of a new film the NEA is helping to promote called, “That’s What I Am”.

I have never met a more sincere, concerned individual. He knows this film will be important to the children who see it. I talked to one of the young actors who

in this my 65th year of life. Another occasion to take some time and reflect.

My focus today is on changes from my high school years until now. Specifically, I look at what confronts our students, especially our seniors about to go off to college, and compare it with what I remember - I graduated from high school in June of 1963.

What I see troubles me.

In 1963 we were still working on issues of equity - it would be the summer after I graduated that I came to DC for the Civil Rights March. We had hope - ah, that's a word with recent familiarity - that we could change things for the better.
