“Why Can’t They Make it Easier to Become a Teacher?” - Lily's Blackboard – Lily's Blackboard

“Why Can’t They Make it Easier to Become a Teacher?”

I can always tell when people have stopped thinking and are just repeating something they heard without a critical look at the premise.

She said without thinking, “I just don’t see why they can’t make it easier to become a teacher.”

And I said, “And of course, we shouldn’t stop with teachers. I don’t see why they can’t make it easier to become a dentist.”

She looked confused.

“I mean,” I continued, “there are a lot of people who have ideas about how to take care of teeth. There are a lot of people who have really good teeth, and they just want to help other people have healthy teeth.”

She furrowed her brow trying to catch the thread of connection and pull it through the eye of some needling of understanding. I caught the silent, “What

When will the testing bubble burst?

This was written by educator Anthony Cody, who taught science for 18 years in inner-city Oakland and now works with a team of science teacher-coaches that supports novice teachers. He is a National Board-certified teacher and an active member of the Teacher Leaders Network. This post appeared on his Education Week Teacher blog,Living in Dialogue.

In the mid-1920s our economy boomed. The stock market, then relatively new, soared to amazing heights, as the middle class invested their money and saw their wealth grow. But there was a problem. The stock market prices had inflated beyond the intrinsic worth of the companies they were based upon. This came to be known as a stock market bubble, because when the inflation of value stopped, the bubble burst and the economy collapsed.

The nation experienced another bubble recently with the rising value of real estate, which blew up in our faces a few years ago, and is still

First pass at finance reform - by John Fensterwald - Educated Guess

Assembly Education Chairwoman Julia Brownley has fleshed out the bill that she hopes will be the vehicle to overhaul the state’s school finance system, beginning in 2015-16. AB 18 will get its first public hearing in her committee on Wednesday. The bill’s goals are to simplify convoluted funding formulas and to target more money to poor [...]

Washington State PTSA Tackles Paying for Teachers

The Washington State PTSA, at this weekend's convention, took up a resolution on local units paying for teachers/staff. (Note; the resolution is about two-thirds of the way down the document.) They are advocating for PTSAs to NOT pay for teachers/staff.
Basically, they state:
  • it's the state's duty to pay for basic education. PTAs supporting staff make it that much easier for the state AND their district to not have to step up and do their duty.
  • they point out the risks including inequities between students, making the school/district look more stable than it may be,skew student data and place tremendous pressure on the parents to raise money every

Kindergarten wait list crisis: pictures are louder than words

Is this really pocket overcrowding, as the DOE still maintains? With waiting lists at more than one fourth of the city's elementary schools? Check out the maps below.

Just as the administration cuts the capital plan back by almost 50%.....check out the evidence of the growing overcrowding crisis in our schools. Though the DOE will say not all these children will be forced to attend schools outside their zone, many of them will; others will be consigned to class sizes of 25 or more; and other families will have moved out of the city because of the lack of space in their neighborhood schools.

If you put your cursor over the school, its name will appear; if you click on it, you will see the number of children

Educators4NYCEducator Press Release

Our new organization, Educators4NYCEducator, has taken a stand for the good of NYC Schools. It is our contention that, should layoffs occur, that reverse seniority order is unacceptable. For the good of our students, we need to ensure quality. We therefore propose that, should layoffs occur, that we not focus over who does or does not get laid off. What is truly important is that the NYC Department of Education invest 80 million dollars in the Educators4NYCEducator Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to the enhancement of all educators in the foundation, primarily myself and Miss Eyre.

As everyone knows, a good teacher is a happy teacher. Both Miss Eyre and myself vow to be exceedingly happy once the city forks over the 80 million dollars. In fact, we are so confident that this will improve our practices that we are willing to forgo the next year's payment of 80 million dollars if the first 80 million fails to enhance our

Times are unquestionably tough, and funding for schools has been cut to the point that they're struggling to fulfill their mission, so we support taking private dollars to help make ends meet. Cut Spending In GOP Districts? Maybe It’s Good Policy

By Peter Schrag

Could hitting Republican districts with the lion’s share of the steep spending reductions required by an all-cuts California budget be good policy, regardless of the politics?

Two leading Democrats, Treasurer Bill Lockyer and Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg have been threatening just that if Republicans don’t agree to put the tax extensions that Gov. Jerry Brown wants on the ballot.

“You don’t want to pay for government,” Steinberg said last week, “well then, you get less of it.” Lockyer’s been saying pretty much the same thing.

The obvious first question: are these serious ideas or just threats? And to what extent could the legislature’s Democratic majority do it even if they wanted to? But in some instances, targeting Republican districts might be good policy even if it’s not unequivocally good politics.

Immigrant Rights Supporters Refocus Struggle on Obama

By Liz Gonzalez

More than 300 people packed the Sacred Heart church in San Jose last Tuesday to hear Congressman Luis Gutierrez speak about immigration reform at a town hall meeting. The event was part of a 20-city tour being organized by the congressman from Illinois to energize and refocus immigrant rights supporters ahead of a national day of protests scheduled for Sunday, May 1.

Five years after immigrant rights advocates staged their first large-scale May Day protests, and with little

Education Push Polls: 9 Fake Questions Versus 9 Real Questions

Seattle, remember that push poll that the Broad and Gates backed Alliance for Education did last year just before contract negotiations began between our Broad-trained superintendent and the teachers’ union? There were several interesting comments made about it on the Save Seattle Schools blog last year.

Since then we have discovered that this sort of manufacturing of consent has happened in several parts of the country when the corporate reform groups want to swoop in and takeover schools, turn them into charter schools and bust the teachers’ union so that the charter franchises can then hire cheap labor, many times in the form of Teach for America recruits, to staff their schools.

Education and the Abilene Paradox: Why speaking out is important

Education may be more impacted than any other field by the "Abilene Paradox," the problem that arises when all or most members of a group disagree with a policy but go along with it because they think everybody else does.

'"Abilene' is the Texas city in the Abilene paradox. It refers to the retelling by (Jerry) Harvey of a lousy decision by his family. On a hot summer day, the family piled into a car without air conditioning and drove to Abilene to try a new diner. The heat was oppressive; the food was lousy. But no one dared to speak in those terms until later that night back home. Finally, the matriarch of the family broke the silence by complaining about the food. Then everyone chimed in with their complaint–the car was hot, it was stupid to try an unknown restaurant. It

My 9/11 Memories as a Teacher.

Tonight we got word from President Obama that Osama Bin Laden was killed by American forces. I never feel good about anyone dying, but I find the exception with this announcement. I actually feel relief and a sense of justice in this news. Since this happened 10 years ago there are many people out there who may have not been directly affected by this horrific event.

I taught in a suburb of NYC in September of 2001. Like many Long Island schools, the community included many NYC firefighters and NYC policemen and police women. In addition many of our parents worked in NYC and in the Twin Towers specifically. The twin Towers was a great part of the lives of many New Yorkers. I personally celebrated several special occasions at the Windows on the World Restaurant at the top of the Towers.

September 11, 2001 began as any other day in school. The energy was very high with teachers and students,

Math and Solidarity

I wish I had a big splashy piece for May Day. But no. Not here, not this year. This is just a little something I’ve been wanting to point out for weeks: math teachers played a nice role in EduSolidarity Day.

March 22nd NYC teachers wore red in solidarity with teachers in other states (Wisconsin led the headlines). And Steve Lazar (blogs at Outside the Cave, which despite coming from the Western Reserve, has nothing to do withJacobs Field) thought: why not a blogger thing? a group answer to the question: Why do teachers like us support our unions?

So he gets me and Jose Vilson and Ken Bernstein (Teacher Ken) on board, and we launch, (facebook, too) and over a hundred bloggers write. Nice little splash. But math teachers? We were counted.

  1. First, Vilson does a clever lead in (union=unity, not a job, a career) to his real post, over at Huff. Jose
