At least 5,000 public schools, serving more than 3 million children, are considered failing in the United States because they have failed to meet their academic achievement targets for at least five consecutive years. A new issue brief released today by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) offers states ideas to fix failing schools and districts.

State Strategies for Fixing Failing Schools and Districts looks at ways to cope with the underlying causes of failing schools including: weak leadership; inadequate skill levels among teachers; and insufficient, high-quality teaching materials.

No kidding — nope.

On Thursday, the Huffington Post carried a piece by Michelle Rhee in which the former Washington, D.C., schools chancellor attempted to address a controversy that has divided the education world. Auditors, she wrote, found erasure marks on student tests during her tenure to be within normal ranges.

NASHVILLE — The House voted 70-23 today for a bill backers say shields teachers from being disciplined if they discuss alternatives to evolution and global warming theories with students.

The debate ranged over the scientific method, “intellectual bullies,” hair spray and “Inherit the Wind,” a 1960 movie about the 1925 Scopes Trial in Dayton, Tenn.

Rep. Bill Dunn, R-Knoxville, said the bill’s intent is to promote “critical thinking” in science classrooms.

Critics contend it’s a shield to allow the teaching of evolution alternatives such as intelligent design and creationism.

Twenty-four hours ago challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg was looking at an all but certain recount of her razor-thin victory over incumbent Justice David Prosser in the Supreme Court race. Now that it's come to light that Prosser might take a thin but substantial lead due to a computer error in Waukesha County, Kloppenburg could be the one to trigger a recount. But one thing hasn't changed: both camps are lawyering up and have brought in the big guns.

Kloppenburg's campaign is working with Marc Elias, an attorney with Perkins Coie, a Washington D.C.
