30 of the City's 3,021,588  families push Cuomo, state Legislature to allow more charter schools

About 30 city families called on Gov. Cuomo and the state Legislature Wednesday to allow more charter schools to be created.

Cuomo had sought to include a provision for more charters in the state budget, but the issue was dropped from the spending plan and is now being considered by lawmakers.
Under current law, the charter school operators may still add 25 schools to the city’s existing 197 charters. But charter advocates and pro-charter parents say that’s not enough.
“I don’t think there should be a cap on charter schools at all,” said Karen Martin, 41, of Midwood, Brooklyn, at a press conference organized by the pro-charter group Families for Excellent Schools at City Hall.
Martin said she tried to get her daughter into a charter school in 2015 but was told Monday by school officials that there were not enough seats for the girl.
Charter school opponents say there are already enough of the privately run, publicly funded schools in the city. They contend many charter schools have vacant seats.
City schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña said she believes the charter cap should stay where it is. “I think at the moment the number is just where it needs to be,” Fariña said.City families push Cuomo, Albany for more charter schools - NY Daily News:
