New NAEP data: Getting it right with younger students. Stalling at high school. Why?  

This morning the Nation's Report Card: Trends in Academic Progress 2012 was released, showing significant improvement in how well American students perform in reading and math over previous generations. 
The assessment, given to 26,000 students in each subject, shows marked progress in 9-year-old and 13-year-olds, especially minority students, but flat performance by most 17-year-olds.
Here is the statement from Brent Houston, principal of the Shawnee (Okla.) Middle School and a member of the National Assessment Governing Board, which oversees the National Assessment of Education Progress.
