Something to be thankful for: Public education

With the season of giving upon us, it is time to sit down and reflect on all of the things for which we are thankful. For many, it's family and good friends. For others, good health or a successful career leaves one feeling grateful. While I am certainly thankful for all of those, I am also thankful for our public schools of which we have much to be proud. America's public schools are gateways of opportunity for millions of students, and I am proud to have been one of them.
As a nation, we owe much gratitude to Thomas Jefferson, a visionary whose wisdom and foresight laid the groundwork for public education, as we know it today. Jefferson, our nation's third president, once said, "No other sure foundation can be devised, for the preservation of freedom and happiness ... preach, my dear sir, a crusade against ignorance; establish and improve the law for educating the common people."
