Indianapolis mom Erin Tuttle says she knew she had a problem when she opened her third grader’s new math book.
The way the math was taught, Tuttle said, was not what she considered standard practice.
“There was a reintroduction of something called reform math, ‘fuzzy math,’ popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s, I think,” Tuttle said. “It’s basically a less traditional math curriculum.”
The curriculum, Tuttle said, was reintroduced because of the Common Core State Standards Initiative — a national set of standards designed to create a uniform set of expectations for kids in kindergarten through 12th grade across the United States.
But Tuttle says it’s actually hurting her kids’ education. Now, her concerns will be taken to the Indiana State Senate, where the Common Core standards might be overturned.
