Kevin Johnson is the first African American to be elected as Mayor of Sacramento. Since taking office in December 2008, Mayor Johnson has improved public safety and public education, increase economic development, and set higher government standards through community engament and accountability. He also launched ‘Volunteer Sacramento’ an initiative to increase volunteerism in the community.
Prior to his mayoral position, Johnson served as the CEO of St. HOPE, a non-profit community development organization he founded in 1989 to revitalize inner-city communities of Sacramento. He is best known as a professional basketball player in the NBA for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Phoenix Suns. Johnson is a three-time NBA All-Star.
Johnson is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley (B.A., Political Science). He served as a guest commentator on several networks including CNN, MSNBC, and Fox, and has been featured on The Larry King Live Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dateline NBC and The Colbert Report.
Michelle Rhee is the founder and CEO of StudentsFirst, an organization formed in 2010 to address the educational system in America. Previously, Rhee served as chancellor of the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), a school district serving more than 47,000 students in 123 schools. Under her leadership, DCPS school district became the only major city system to see double-digit growth in reading and math scores in seventh, eighth and tenth grades over three years.
Rhee has spent the last 18 years improving and advocating educational and teaching excellence. She was a member of Teach for America and founded The New Teacher Project.
Rhee currently serves on the Advisory Boards for the National Council on Teacher Quality, the National Center for Alternative Certification, and Project REACH of the University of Phoenix’s School of Education. Rhee received a bachelor’s degree in government from Cornell University and a master’s in public policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
Will K. Weinstein, money manager and former partner in two very successful investment banking firms, currently teaches at San Francisco State University and leads a post graduate summer course, “Ethics and Integrity in the Real World,” at the Law School and the Shidler College of Business. This is Weinstein’s ninth summer teaching the course, introducing special guest speakers to the University and helping to make this conversation series available to the public.
