Education Roundup for Week of August 29, 2011

SACRAMENTO — The California Department of Education (CDE) today issues this week's Education Roundup featuring education-related announcements of public interest.
Art Education Conference to be Held in San Francisco
The public is invited to register for a forum next month in San Francisco to discuss how to promote art programs that improve student academic success. The Fall National Forum will be held September 15-16 at the Francis Drake Hotel. The event is sponsored by a national coalition called the Arts Education Partnership. The Forum will showcase some of the nation’s boldest arts-based models of whole school reform. Research shows that an arts-rich learning environment can contribute to student success in school and later in their careers.
The California Arts Council has been invited to participate. The Forum opens with a plenary session on California’s statewide approach to funding and sustaining innovative arts programs through public engagement, public policy, and economic development.
To register for the Forum, please visit the Arts Education Partnership Website at Arts Education Partnership (Outside Source).
Heat-Related Illness Prevention
Many students have started training for the high school sports season before the traditional start of school in the fall. With temperatures rising above 90 degrees, this may cause an increase in heat-related illnesses, and in rare cases, fatalities.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention has created a Web-based course to help train school districts, teachers, coaches, nurses, and parents on heat-related illness prevention. The goal is to raise awareness of the problem, and promote the development and implementation of guidelines to prevent this illness.
For the free Web-based course, please visit the CDC Website at Health Studies: Natural Disasters and Severe Weather: Heat Related Illness (HRI) Prevention | CDC HSB (Outside Source).
