The annual ritual of issuing and rescinding teacher layoffs could end with a bill a North County Assembly member says he will propose next year.

Assemblyman Martin Garrick, R-Carlsbad, said he will introduce a bill next year to push back the March 15 deadline for issuing teacher layoffs because many educators have told him the date is too early to accurately predict state funding for school districts for the upcoming year.

"It's just creating some unnecessary stress and false deadlines that aren't representative of the real world," Garrick said last week.

By state law, school districts have until March 15 to notify teachers and other certificated workers that they could be laid off for the following school year. The deadline is intended to give certificated employees ample
