Get a Look Inside the NY Budget Negotiations
Last fall, many promises were made and those promises must be kept. Our conference believes that New Yorkers recognize the economic crisis we’re in and have one expectation: a fair budget in which the pain is shared by all, vital programs are protected, and state dollars are spent more responsibly. Albany must improve and learn from costly past mistakes, so they are not repeated. Stopping the “Tenant Tax”: On June 15th, rent protections on more than one million affordable housing units (home to 2.5 million New Yorkers) will expire amounting to the single greatest tax increase on middle-income renting families our state has ever seen. When my colleague, Senator Adriano Espaillat asked how something as critical to our economic base and state housing policy could be excluded, the response was “why do today what we can put off ‘til tomorrow?” We do not agree and will continue fighting for
