Chicago Teachers Union Calls on Mayoral Candidates for Elected School Board

Chicago - Chicago's Teachers Union is calling on mayoral candidates to return to a school board elected by voters.
An elected school board has not been in place in Chicago since 1995, when Mayor Daley was given control of the schools and began appointing school board members.
CTU President Karen Lewis said the board should be representative of the city and filled with educators.
“The top down decisions made by non-educators have not shown the improvement that the very people who destroyed it are now clamoring for,” Lewis said.
Two candidates have responded to the union's proposal.
Rahm Emanuel's campaign said that the school board selection process should not be politicized, but believes that teachers should be represented on the board.
Candidate Gery Chico said the union's proposal would hurt students.
