District again misses No Child Left Behind goals

The Houston school district failed to make adequate academic progress toward goals set out under the No Child Left Behind law for the third year in a row, according to preliminary figures to be released on today by the Texas Education Agency.

Alief, Galveston, Galena Park and North Forest are among the other Texas school districts that didn't meet the mark. Overall, about 21 percent of school systems missed what the federal government calls "adequate yearly progress," up from 17 percent last year.

Several districts, including Houston ISD, failed because they let too many children take alternative exams designed for students with learning disabilities. Most students take the standard Texas
