"Madison — Citing low Milwaukee Public Schools scores on a national assessment, Gov. Jim Doyle called Tuesday for a special legislative session on Dec. 16 to give the Milwaukee mayor the power to appoint the school superintendent.
That's the same day lawmakers hope to pass a bill to toughen drunken driving laws.
Doyle for weeks has pushed for the change to help secure a share of $4.35 billion in federal Race to the Top funds. But he faces strong opposition from some of his fellow Democrats who control the Legislature.
'I truly hope the Legislature understands the urgency of this,' Doyle said. 'We are not going to turn these schools around in a month or even a year, but we have to start immediately.'
Legislative leaders gave no commitments to holding votes Dec. 16 on Doyle's plan, and opponents said they were confident Doyle could not force it through the Legislature next week."
