Educator Michelle Rhee from “Waiting For Superman” was in Philadelphia and she spoke about why she was in our city.

Rhee was visiting Simon Gratz and she shot down rumors she was in the running for the Superintendant job in Philadelphia.

Rhee just married former NBA star and Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson and she laughed at the suggestion.

It’s back to school time – again – for 28,000 students in Tacoma, Wash., now that striking teachers and district officials have reached agreement on a contract.

Ending the 10-day ordeal took intervention from Gov. Christine Gregoire. After she called union and district representatives to her office in Olympia Wednesday, they negotiated with mediators for hours and made a late-night announcement about the tentative agreement.

The strike garnered national attention as a rare line-in-the-sand moment for teachers during a time of education reforms and massive state budget cuts that have left many teachers and their unions feeling unfairly targeted.

JOPLIN, Mo. — On the day before he and President Obama plan to announce an overhaul of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan visited Joplin to review tornado recovery.

In addition to lauding the school district its on-time start, Duncan, one of the more vocal members of the president’s cabinet, previewed some of the changes the Obama administration plans to announce to revamp federal education standards by letting states opt-out of the current law, which Missouri education officials have said they will pursue.

Indiana’s law extending school vouchers to middle-income families is causing an outflow of students from public schools to private, primarily religious, schools. School officials joined teachers union leaders in calling the program a stealth subsidy for parochial schools and a drain on already cash-poor public schools.

The Indiana State Teachers Association has filed a lawsuit charging the law violates the state constitution's required separation of church and state. Early numbers bear that out: All but six of the 242 non-public schools so far approved for the voucher program have religious affiliations.

State officials report 3,259 students have enrolled so far in the voucher program. That eclipses the first-year enrollment in Ohio, home of the nation’s only other statewide voucher system.

Thank God for the Chicago Reader’s Ben Joravsky.

I say that not just because of the brilliant column he wrote about me last July, calling me the Paul Revere of school reform.

That was some great analysis.

But this week he shows himself to be the only one in all of Chicago media who hasn’t swallowed Rahm’s kool-aid about the 90 minutes added to the school day.

Joravsky nails the little SOB. Joravsky says it ain’t about the kids. It’s about power and busting the union. You
