Charter School Defenders Insist They are "Private Entities"

Over the past several years we have become accustomed to hearing that "Charter schools are public schools too," from advocates of their expansion.  However, when anyone attempts to subject these schools to any sort of regulatory oversight, this designation is often the first thing to be discarded. Case in point? A California couple, Yevgeny "Eugene" Selivanov and Tatyana Berkovich, who were convicted in April of multiple counts of fraud related to their practice of using their charter school bank account for personal expenses and thousands of dollars worth of meals. 
According to the LA School Report,  The couple is appealing their conviction, however, asserting that this amounts to a misunderstanding over the nature of charter school finances. An amicus brief has been filed in the case by the California Charter Schools Association, which urges the appeals court to set aside the conviction on numerous grounds. 
 The table of contents of the Amicus brief enumerates the reasons charter school operators should not be subject to this sort of oversight:

What does "education" mean for our youngest learners? The first years of school are as important for an educated population as any other period, perhaps more. Additionally, research shows that implementation of high-quality preschool programs can be beneficial for the lifelong development of children in low-income families and that an upfront commitment to early education provides returns to society that are many times more valuable than the original investment.
With the current focus on standards and academic achievement, is learning and testing coming too early? Curriculum and assessment should be based on the best knowledge of theory and research about how children develop and learn with attention given to individual children's needs and interests in a group in relation to program goals. Join us throughout October as we look at the importance of early childhood education and the specific social, cognitive, and emotional needs these learners have that are different than those of older learners. If early childhood is where we begin to build skills and behaviors such as persistence, empathy, collaboration, and problem solving, are we teaching in developmentally appropriate ways?

He didn’t go down in history as a great songwriter.
But, part of the legacy Apple founder Steve Jobs left behind was music.
Jobs transformed the music industry (at least, that is the gist of the caption under his photo holding an iPod at Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – yes, the business genius has his own section in the esteemed venue).
Jobs didn’t define his world as computer exclusive.
As educators, we could all benefit from this lesson.
October is Connected Educator Month, a well-timed reminder as we hit stride in the new school year to not settle into a pattern of isolation, but to consciously strive to view issues in education through multiple lenses.
The work we do is far too important to rely solely on our own expertise – we must continually seek opportunities to connect, challenge and reinvent. Our network of ideas, support and inspiration provide us strength when we are challenged.  Our peers are no longer limited to the neighboring classroom; we have the potential of a global network.
As a district superintendent, I endeavor to connect with classroom teachers, I reflect on my time and experiences as a building administrator, and I engage our students to gather input from a learner’s

I’ve been promising for some time to cover some of the many secret and not-so-secret grants and data operations that will result in your data, and your children’s data being stolen and shared without your permission or knowledge. Now that it is clear the EPIC lawsuit against the US Department of Education has failed, the only solution to fix this problem is a state privacy law to protect the rights of parents, students and teachers. Considering the federal government can’t even agree to fund the federal government for a minute to protect our nation from terrorists or the prevent children from staving or dying from cancer, I have feel pretty confident they will not try to address student privacy concerns anytime soon. I’ve provided details to others on how this privacy law/framework would work and the necessary elements for meaningful legislation, but for now I will provide the documentation in a series of posts that shows why such a law is needed.
I will try to cover at least one scheme a day for the rest of the week. Some of the projects I’m considering covering are Kickboard, WDQI, MSIX, among many others like inBloom and Ed-Fi. Today I will mention a new database I learned about for tracking disabled students in a federal database.
This database grant awarded to Weststat Inc., by the US Department of Ed, is intuitively called the “National Technical Assistance Center to Improve State Capacity to Accurately Collect and Report IDEA Data.” (Or I guess NTACTISCTACARID for short?) This grant is aimed at creating a:
