Matt Minnick wasn’t alone in being less than forthcoming about who he was when he testified before the Florida Senate Budget Committee’s March 3rd  hearing on SB 1718 . An AFL-CIO lobbyist wasn’t either. The one-time Teach for America corps member turned legislative aid for Jeb Bush’s foundation tried to pass himself off as a former teacher before being outed by Sen. Eleanor Sobel, D-Hollywood. Minnick naturally was testifying in support of the now defeated parent trigger bill.
Minnick was indeed a teacher and his resume includes two years teaching in Atlanta public schools as a Teach for America corp member. It is no small thing to go into a large urban school as did Minnick at Therrell High School. He touts his student’s success on end-of-course exams. Clearly establishing himself as an advocate for test results as a marker of success, Mennick  might be surprised to learn that Georgia Department of Educ

How do you measure who is an effective teacher?

More states are wrestling with that question, now that the Obama administration is encouraging schools to evaluate teachers with a combination of student test scores and classroom observations.

The question of whether teacher evaluations are reliable indicators for teacher effectiveness has long been controversial. But New York City reignited the debate when it rated thousands of teachers with test scores alone — and then released those ratings to the public.

Leaders of New Group Have an "Interest" in Education



Few people define themselves as being a member of a special interest. That term applies to the folks on the other side -- the people you disagree with. New Yorkers got more evidence of that this month with the formation of StudentsFirstNY. In a nutshell, the group wants to preserve and extend the education policies of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and battle the teachers union, which has had an increasingly rancorous relationship with Bloomberg. In its mission statement, the group declares,
StudentsFirstNY will be New York's leading voice for students who depend on public education for the skills they need to succeed, but who are too often failed by a system that puts special interests, rather than the interests of children, first.
Nice sentiments. But the people behind this statement hardly qualify as disinterested observers anymore than the United Federation of Teachers does. The New York StudentsFirst group is an offshoot of the national organization StudentsFirst, created by former Washington, D.C. schools superintendent Michelle Rhee. It includes many who have backed the Bloomberg administration's education policies over the years -- people who even their foes have come to call reformers. The
