Teach for America loves to expand its reach, and so it has again, this time partnering with the controversial Imagine schools, the nation’s largest for-profit charter school network.
That’s an interesting pairing.
Imagine is based in Arlington, Virginia, with some 75 schools in more than a dozen states, including Maryland, and the District of Columbia. The for-profit charter operator has been investigated in some states for the way it exercises control over the schools it manages, essentially ignoring the boards of trustees that are supposed to really run the schools.

Before February11, 2011, I rarely discussed with my Wisconsin non-union friends andneighbors the merits or demerits of union rights. However, as noted in lastweek’s post, GovernorWalker’s dichotomous creationleaves no room, short of his recall, for safeguarding publiceducators’ union rights. Securing the recall of defective governorship inWisconsin requires public educators to garner support for their unions fromnon-union workers.

Admittedly, defending teachers’ collectivebargaining rights is a challenge when the vast majority of private sectorworkers are currently not union members. I do not claim to know what is bestfor non-union laborers in their own lines of work. However, I unapologetically believe thatprotecting teacher union rights is vital to the long-term future of qualitypublic education.

A year ago, I made this very point to my localschool board members in urging local opposition to Walker’s union-bustingrepair bill. In response, one commissioner wrote,

Since some people think that everything in education can be reduced to a number, let's follow their lead.
  • 76: The percentage of teachers who report that their school's budget decreased in the last year (after the recession officially ended).

  • 63: The percentage of teachers who say that theirclass sizes increased in the last year.

  • 16.4 million: The number of children in Americaliving in poverty.

    Leaders of the Milwaukee teachers union are campaigning for members to sacrifice a week's worth of their pay to help reduce class sizes next year in Milwaukee Public Schools, if legislation allowing them a window of time to negotiate a salary reduction is signed by Gov. Scott Walker.
    The MPS Children's Week Campaign, which will be discussed with the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association membership beginning Saturday, is asking educators to give up 2.6% of their salary next year, or about five days of pay, to allow for class-size relief.
    The campaign also is poised to ask higher-paid MPS employees as well as community members and businesses in Milwaukee to consider contributing some of their wages or profits to a nonprofit district fund. The union will be discussing the proposal with

    Long time readers of this blog may remember our article from last Summer, "Why Does Diane Ravitch Hate Children?"  Well, she's at it again only this time the victim of her ill-considered opinions are our nation's teachers.

    When the recent survey conducted by Met Life found teacher job satisfaction at the lowest point in decades, we at Last Stand for Children First were naturally quite dismayed.   We believe attracting and retaining excellent quality teachers is the key to giving students a first rate education.  Fortunately, recent research by Teach for America shows that most excellent teachers are only in their first or second year of teaching.   Still, it is vital that we retain our best teachers for both of those important years.

    Of course Diane Ravitch's response to the survey was to write an article in Education Week.  To save you the trouble of reading the article, I will tell you that Ravitch blames all the usual suspects that whining teachers love to complain about:

    It cannot be accidental that the sharp drop in teacher morale coincides with the efforts of people such as Michelle Rhee and organizations such as Education Reform Now and Stand for Children
