    During a tense two minutes Monday during which she apologized to thousands on the Quad for the recent arrest and pepper-spraying of peaceful protesters, UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi struggled against tears when referencing Nov. 17, 1973.

    “I was there, and I don’t want to forget that,” she said.

    Many in the crowd likely were unsure of the date’s meaning.

    Now, though, in an odd twist, the legacy of that day — when Katehi herself was a student activist in her native Greece — has opened a new line of criticism of the embattled chancellor.

    In December 2010, Katehi took part on a panel of international experts that recommended Greece end a decades-old asylum law that effectively kept police off its campuses.

    She and others felt the law was long abused by thugs. Others say it was later abolished in a crackdown against

    "We're failing." I wonder how many times I've heard that. "As a failing school, there are some changes that need to be made around here." All five schools I've worked at (in four states) have devoted significant time and energy to avoid the label.

    At my current school, clear expectations for "improvement" have been communicated to the administration. Those expectations are communicated to staff on at least a weekly basis - although possibly less clearly than whence they originate, maybe a little more sugar-coated.

    And so the tension is with us again. It's always with us. What does it mean to improve our school?

    It’s not easy finding “American made” anything these days, let alone made by union workers. We simply don’t manufacture anything any more. God help us all if the Chinese decide to cut us off. We’ll all be sitting in the dark, on the floor and bare-assed.

    OccupySupply has had good luck finding really well made union made hats, socks, scarves, blankets and polar fleece items. But I thought I would put up the list of things we haven’t had much luck sourcing, in case anyone out there has a line on suppliers:

    Gloves — The bane of my existence. As I told greenharper today, we’ve only been able to identify two union glove makers in the US: North Star Gloves and The Knoxville Glove Company. Both manufacture very sturdy and well-made work gloves, but they’re not really what we need to keep people warm. We finally went with a family owned glove making company to buy polypropylene self-wicking gloves (similar to the polypropylene base layer clothing we have been supplying to the occupations, our #1 most requested item). They’re designed for people who need to keep their hands warm and dry during activities, however, more than extreme cold protection. So we still need a heavy duty union made cold weather glove.

    Boots — We have a dual problem with boots. There are many great USA bootmakers, and many of them have union facilities: Red Wing, Danner, Belleville, Matterhorn and Weinbrenner among others. There is a plentiful

    Hoover Institute economist, Eric Hanushek, is one of the chief think tank hacks for corporate education reform and the testing-industrial complex. His work consistently reminds us of the definition of "ecomomist" as "an expert who will know tomorrow why the things he predicted yesterday did not happen today." As a perfect example of this characterization, Hanushek much prefers to use empirical data to speculate his way toward a shared acceptance of his plutocratic patrons' preconceived notions by building a statistical house of cards inside a hypothesized future that we can only appreciate in the end for its entertainment value, rather than its factual veracity.
