It's advisory board reads like a who's who of California's hyper-wealthy
political players. There's developer Eli Broad, Netflix founder and former
president of the state board of education Reed Hastings, Silicon Valley
venture capitalist John Doerr, and Gap founder Don Fisher. While different
in political philosophy and temperament, they are linked by their desire to
change California's educational system--and they put their money where their
mouths are.

And in June, their money, if not their mouths, will be on both sides of the
debate over a new income tax to pay for universal preschool.

Proposition 82, sponsored by Hollywood producer Rob Reiner, would provide
free preschools for every four-year-old in the state. It would boost the
personal income-tax rate by 1.7 percent on California's wealthiest
residents, those individuals with annual incomes of $400,000 or more, and
families with incomes above $800,000. Together, these people represent about

As reader of this blog know, I am working on a report that focuses on Texas charter schools. Many of the myths surrounding charter schools–especially the so-called high-performing charter schools–will be examined and some debunked.

In doing this research, I found something very, very curious. The Texas Education Agency lists a number of schools with the KIPP name. Yet, KIPP does not claim all of these schools on their national website.

Maybe I missed the names on the national website (http://www.kipp.org/schools/school-directory). Maybe the Texas Education Agency made a mistake (not likely since the names are submitted by the districts). Maybe there is a perfectly reasonable explanation. But both Great Schools and the Texas Tribune list ALL the schools in the table below as KIPP Schools. Again, perhaps there is a logical explanation such as they do not consider

Family photos line the wall of the home where Mandy Durkin, 27, grew up and has now returned to live with her parents.

Danny Guo came marching home two years ago as a corporal from the U.S. Marine Corps, thinking the country he served would be a land of instant job opportunity.

He was a radio operator. Plenty of work in that field, he thought. Recession-battered employers thought otherwise.

After hoofing the pavement for dozens of interviews that left him the choice of flipping burgers or filing papers, he did what more young people are doing now than at any time since the 1950s: He moved back in with his parents.

It seems the old saying, "There's no place like home," is ringing truer than ever.

Now, at 23 years old, Guo is changing his career goal to interior design - grateful that his old bedroom in

BEVERLY HILLS – Gov. Jerry Brown said Thursday that the school testing program he proposed overhauling in last year's gubernatorial campaign is a "good system" he will keep intact.

Brown's remarks came after a rift between the governor and Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg over education policy opened Saturday, when Brown vetoed legislation by the Sacramento Democrat that would have changed how the state measures school performance.

At the Board meeting of Wednesday, October 19, the Board will both introduce and adopt their Superintendent Evaluation Instrument.


It is, on the whole, a better considered evaluation tool than they have used before. It has some elements that I really like. It is also missing a few things that I would like to see it include.


I encourage you to read it for yourself and reach your own opinion. Then send that opinion to the Board within the next two days because that's when they will be voting on it. So be quick about it.
