    It's rare for education reformers, policymakers, and funders to listen to those at the heart of this work: The students. In fact Ann Curry who hosted Education Nation's first *student panel admitted folks at NBC were a little nervous about putting kids on stage. In their "Voices of a Nation" discussion, young people provided insight into their own experiences with education and what they think needs to be done to ensure that every student receives a world-class education. After the discussion Curry knew these students didn't disappoint. She told viewers, "Students wanted to say something that made a difference to you (adults) and they did. Now adults need to listen."

    Anti-teacher union bills will hurt schools

    Right now, Republican politicians are more intent on attacking teachers and other school employees than doing anything that is proven to help students or create jobs.

    Unlimited charter and cyber schools. Mandatory "schools of choice." Outsourcing teachers. Back-door school vouchers. And a litany of anti-union measures that are more political payback than sound policy.

    The net effect of all this? The destruction of neighborhood schools and the undermining of the middle class.

    The financial impact of recently introduced bills will be devastating on neighborhood schools as more money is siphoned off to unproven charters and cyber schools, as well as dual enrollment programs that will benefit a small number of students.

    This comes on the heels of the $1 billion that lawmakers cut from public education while they agreed to a massive $1.8 billion tax break for corporations and CEOs.

    These bills also represent an effort by Lansing politicians to take local control from school districts and

    Two days ago, The New Yorker Magazine published a lengthy and important article on “coaching” and featured the instructional coaching program at the Albemarle County School District in Virgina.     Group Asks Supreme Court to Allow Religious Services in Schools

    A Bronx evangelical church and its supporters have petitioned the United States Supreme Court to hear a case on whether New York City can bar religious services in its public schools.

    The Alliance Defense Fund filed the petition Tuesday on behalf of the Bronx Household of Faith, which has been trying for 16 years to get the city to drop a rule forbidding religious services in school buildings in after-school hours. The new petition argues that the government cannot keep religious services out of public buildings that are open for other meetings.

    “The U.S. Supreme Court has definitively ruled that the government cannot limit access to generally available public spaces merely because government officials disapprove of a form of expression,” said Jordan Lorence, senior counsel for the Arizona-based Alliance Defense Fund. “Equal access means equal access, and that
