      In a lawsuit they’ll announce Wednesday, school boards and school administrators associations will contend that the Legislature and Gov. Jerry Brown shorted K-12 schools and community colleges $2.1 billion owed to them under Proposition 98.

      The money was diverted form the general fund as part of Brown’s plan to move some state responsibilities to counties and cities. In return, the governor and Legislature issued an IOU in the form of a promise to ask voters no later than November 2012 to raise taxes and repay what was owed to the schools.

      But in their suit, the California School Boards Association, the Association of California Schools Administrators and a handful of school districts will argue that that shifting 1.06

      To anyone who “doesn’t believe in unions or collective bargaining:” Union members and collective bargaining set the standards you enjoy at your place of employment, whether or not you belong to a union. The forty hour work week, scheduled lunches and breaks, workmen’ s compensation, and a five day work week are all standard employment practices because men and women who labored before us stood together and fought for them.

      My grandfathers toiled the the coal mines in Virginia and on the assembly lines in Detroit during WWII. Their unions, United Mine Workers of America, and United Auto Workers, made it difficult for them to be fired if they were injured on the job, and if they were hurt, they had medical benefits,

      The third day of Education Nation kicked off with a lively debate between charter school manager and educator Geoffrey Canada and education historian Diane Ravitch. Canada applauded the success of the charter schools in Harlem and elsewhere, with Ravitch countering that his schools and other charters had far more resources at their disposal than the average public school. Talk then branched into many of the public-private partnerships that some charters use. Canada, in his usual animated fashion, said he didn’t mind the private funding. He argued that private companies provide funds for new and potentially transformative ideas. “Education has no pressure to innovate whatsoever,” said Canada. Ravitch answered with a rejoinder that one in three charter schools, which have been given more freedom to experiment with curriculum and
