If Teachers Were Treated Like Stars! A Short Story…

Can you imagine what it would be like if teachers were treated like actors, athletes, and singers, hey, even reality tv “stars?” Life would be so different for us.

”Mrs.Smith, Mrs.Smith, can I get your autograph?” She turned and smiled at the young woman running towards her.

“Mrs.Smith”, she gasped,” I have been following your career for years! I’m about to start teaching myself. She handed Mrs.Smith a copy of her book.

“Are you ready for it, young lady?’ she asked, “This is a difficult job.”

“I know it is, but I’ve been reading your books, and I know I’m ready!”

“Good luck”, she says as she hands her the signed paper. “Take care.”

She and her husband go into the restaurant and are seated at the best table. The maitre d’ smiles, and thanks Mrs.Smith, again, for teaching his son when she taught at Tower Hill. After dinner Mr. and Mrs.Smith get into their Mercedes and drive home to their 10 room home in the suburbs. They enter their home and stop to pick up one of the cameras left by the crew from MTV Cribs-

Tell the SCUSD Board--no hiring of management while laying off teachers and classified staff!

by Sacramento Coalition to Save Public Education on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 1:27pm
On Thursday night at the SCUSD school board meeting, Carlos Rico had gone to speak about the new spending that was accepted in the district budget (1.72 million dollar or 2.37 million dollars, depending on the state budget.) However, Carlos was shocked to hear, with over 400 pinked slipped teachers, that the school board had hired an “Assistant Superintendent, Information Education Technology.” The vote was apparently unanimous. An online Superintendent's Organizational Chart dated Feb. 2011 has the position included but vacant.

This will probably be how it is rationalized, that it has been part of the big picture/strategic plan and that it just needed to be filled. Asst Sup's salaries are over 100k. This still doesn't escape the reality that this is a terrible time to be adding another 100k position at the management level. 100k would pay lots of coaches and instructor stipends to maintain extracurricular activities.

If that does not upset you, the district is also advertising a new position, “Assistant Superintendent, Capital Asset Management Services.” An Assistant Superintendent’s salary ranges from $105,490 to $132.014. Currently there is also an Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction and 4 Area Assistant Superintendents. Let us not forget our current chiefs: Chief Academic Officer, Chief Accountability Officer, Chief Human Resources Officer, Chief Communications Officer, Chief Family and Community Engagement Officer, Chief Business Officer, and Chief of Staff. Here are a few things to think about: What is the primary business of any school district?--to educate our children. Who educates our children?--teachers and classified staff do. So our unanswered questions are: Why has the school board approved 1.72 to 2.37 million dollars of new spending (which adds to the deficit)?; why is the district hiring more management when they have sent out hundreds of pink slips?

We urge you to go to the Coalition website--www.savesacramentopublicschools.org and use the link to email the board and superintendent that you are against adding more management to the district in a time of financial crisis.

This short post is a teaser about a charter school study I am currently working on that examines student disappearance rates, ability levels of students entering charter schools, and the ability level of students leaving charter schools. This teaser post focuses on Harmony Schools in Texas run by the Cosmos Foundation. Recent attention has been focused on the schools’ ties with the Gulen movement in Turkey and the use of H1B visas to replace American teachers with Turkish teachers. While I am interested in those issues, I focus on student mobility patterns and student achievement related to those patterns.

This study was funded by the Texas Business and Education Coalition (www.tbec.org) , an independent organization focused on improving school outcomes for all students.

These tables from the Occupational Outlook Handbook (2010-11 Edition) published by the Department of Labor Statistics might help. The book is also available in paperback for $23.00 (free shipping). I really like having a copy floating around my house and think education policy decision-makers should always have one in their possession, too.

The "Occupations with the fastest growth" (Table 1) and the "Occupations with the largest numerical growth" (Table 2) definitely demonstrate that a college degree is not going to be necessary for a huge segment of our future workforce.

I suppose kids could go to college, get their degree, and then end up working as home health aides earning minimum wage as they spend their lives spoon-feeding and changing diapers for aging baby boomers, but that

Illinois Federation President Dan Montgomery, Illinois Education Association President Ken Swanson and UNITE HERE Local 1 President Henry Tamarin greeted the crowd.

Swanson took note of the fact that the IEA RA in March had pulled out of the Hyatt Regency O’Hare. We are

The three NYC dailies have conflicting accounts, sometimes within their very same pages, about why Black was fired by Bloomberg, after three short months. Bloomberg usually sticks by his deputies, no matter what their level of incompetence. Despite all the emphasis on "accountability" at the school level, there is generally little accountability at the top at City Hall.
The Daily News claims that the mayor didn’t like her inability to cut the budget:

Two sources said the mayor became increasingly disenchanted with her inability to do the grueling and technical work of cutting the education budget.

Meanwhile, the NY Post says it was because she made decisions to expand programs too slowly:

What will Black's departure mean for our schools, and my most unfavorite memory of Dennis Walcott

I have mixed reactions to Cathie Black’s resignation. Though friends and colleagues from around the country emailed and called to say that I must be celebrating, I had to respond.... not exactly.

Most parents realized immediately that she was not qualified for the job, although it took the mayor three months of sinking approval ratings for him to appreciate that fact. When he saw the latest polls, with Black approval ratings at 17% and his handling of schools not much higher at 27%, despite millions of dollars spent of ads trying to convince New Yorkers otherwise, he must have figured out it was time to cut bait.

Clearly, Dennis Walcott has far more experience in public education that she did. But watching Walcott in action for the last nine years, I have no evidence that he is ready to take our schools in a new direction. He can hit the ground running; but will it be in the right direction?

Parents are fed up with this administration’s version of education “reform”: rising class sizes, school closings,

Something important took place today at Hamilton High School in Los Angeles. Students at the highly successful magnet school with excellent Humanities, Music, and Drama Magnets as well as 6 small learning communities who were threatened last week with the loss of 22 of their teachers decided to fight back.

Using Facebook and other social media they organized thousands of their fellow students, parents, and supporters to stage a walkout from the school to say in the clearest of possible terms that they were not going to passively roll over and allow their educations and futures to be compromised by politically inspired
