PFT rallies to defend Philly teacher who spoke out
Hope Moffet works at a school that the Philadelphia superintendent wants to close. She spoke out, publicly, strongly, against the closure. As a result, she was suspended, and the District was moving to fire her. Would the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers step up? We have the answer: absolutely.
The closing of Audenried HS is not justified. Hope, a TfAer, said so, clearly. The data were wrong. Audenried, recently reopened, was improving.
The district reassigned her first, and then created charges later. One of the charges was that she shared the

History and Voters Will Not Be Kind
Over the last three weeks, Gov. Scott Walker and his allies in the Wisconsin Legislature made a mockery of representative government. Rather than listen to the citizens of Wisconsin, who are strongly opposed to stripping teachers, nurses and other workers of their rights, Walker rammed through a bill that was a blatant political payback to his out-of-state major campaign donors and cronies, who have sought for years to crush the aspirations of workers who dare to demand a voice in the workplace. This charade culminated when Walker shredded 50 years of labor peace, built through bipartisanship and a democratic process, and signed a bill into law against the wishes of a majority of the voters in Wisconsin.
The governor may have won a short-term political victory, but history and Wisconsin voters won't be so kind. Power exercised without discretion and prudence is corrupting. And based on Gov. Walker's actions -- his underhanded maneuvering to get the bill passed, his misrepresentations that the bill was part of reducing the budget deficit, and his manipulation of the process so the bill could

These same low information voters don't see that happening in reverse, upward to the wealthy elite.
Nate Friedl, an organizer of the Fort Atkinson-based tea party group Rock River Patriots, said members "very much support the governor." … To the extent that his group can help defeat Republicans too closely tied to corporate interests in the future, it will, he said.I guess we shouldn't hold our breath waiting for "help" from these partisan costumed freaks.

Let’s be honest, the powers that be want us to fail, they want schools to NOT meet this AYP…
“Education Secretary Arne Duncan is getting bashed by critics and even supporters for telling Congress that 82 percent of public schools could be at risk of failing to meet education goals this year, up from 37 percent last year” (Strauss, The Answer Sheet, Washingtonpost.com, March 10, 2011).
Their plan… reform, restructure… turn public schools into charter and virtual schools. Give the public over to the corporations…
“What are the implications for a public system as control over educational policy and priority is concentrated under one of the richest

While I strongly disagree with the law pushed through this week by the Wisconsin GOP to strip public sector unions of their collective bargaining rights, I think the political lesson that all politicians can take away from this event is that, whenever possible, you should act quickly and decisively.
If Gov. Scott Walker and the Wisconsin Republican senators were willing to use these hardball andlegally questionable tactics now, there is no reason they shouldn’t have been willing to use them three weeks ago when this fight first started. . . or even last week. I don’t think there is any doubt in people’s minds that, politically, the Wisconsin GOP would have been better off if they did this move the day the Senate Democrats fled, before they could become a national rallying point for labor.
I can only assume that Walker didn’t use this option on day one of the fight because he actually bought into the right-wing propaganda that regular people are angry at greedy teachers, and at first welcomed the stand-off because he thought it would make him look good. But after just the first week, it was clear the public had turned against the GOP in the fight. As we saw in the health care debate and almost every

After two weeks of protests in Wisconsin, we are now watching demonstrations spread across the country. Over the weekend, the online advocacy group MoveOn.org helped mobilize tens of thousands of people, who marched in all 50 state capitals in support of Wisconsin workers. Demonstrators are speaking out against attacks by Republican governors in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan and their own states.
Librarian Refuses to Be Scott Walker's Scapegoat | AFL-CIO NOW BLOG #1u #wiunion
Audrey Barbakoff, a librarian at the Milwaukee Public Library, is being anything but quiet. In a column in American Libraries Magazine, she says the vilification of public workers--teachers, fire fighters, police officers, nurses and, yes, even librarians--could cause immeasurable long-term damage beyond the loss of jobs and the middle-class lifestyle. She says when Gov. Scott Walker and others plant the notion that public employees only work for the benefits, they ignore the real sacrifices they make and tremendous good they do every day. And public workers need to speak out loudly about their value to their communities: I won't apologize for making a living wage, for being able to visit a doctor when I need one, or for choosing a job that will help me build adequate retirement savings. I deserve and expect those things....But that isn't why I became a librarian....I became one because I wanted to give. | |

In state after state, some politicians are playing politics by launching a coordinated attack on working families. They’re not giving up their pay or pensions—but they want working people to give up theirs.
