U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today released the following statement:

"This week, we sadly lost two young men who took their own lives for one unacceptable reason: they were being bullied and harassed because they were openly gay or believed to be gay. These unnecessary tragedies come on the heels of at least three other young people taking their own lives because the trauma of being bullied and harassed for their actual or perceived sexual orientation was too much to bear.

"This is a moment where every one of us - parents, teachers, students, elected officials, and all people of conscience - needs to stand up and speak out against intolerance in all its forms. Whether it's students harassing other students because of ethnicity, disability or religion; or an adult, public official harassing the President of the University of Michigan student body because he is gay, it is time we as a country said enough. No more. This must stop."

Under the agreement, Boston Public Schools agreed to assess the English proficiency of an estimated 7,000 students who were not previously tested in how well they understand, speak, read and write English. The district also agreed to provide the students with extra

Teachers at Shaver and Alder elementary schools were presented with checks to fund classroom projects in surprise ceremonies in September.

"The teachers were amazed," said Cindy Bartman, principal at Shaver. "They work so hard," she said, often spending weekend time applying for grants and funding. The teachers had posted requests at Donorschoose.org, an online charity where teachers write a short essay explaining a classroom need and donors choose projects they want to fund.

That's where Andrea Wetsel of the Wetsel Co., a SONIC franchisee with four local drive-in restaurants, found them. "We were looking for high-poverty schools in the metro area," Wetsel said. SONIC's national initiative called

Did Tyler Clementi Ask His RA for Help the Day Before He Died?

Evidence is mounting that Tyler Clementi turned to online forums for help in addressing his roommate’s invasion of his privacy, and that he was convinced to bring his concerns to his RA on the evening of September 21 — the day before he died.

Earlier this week it was reported that anonymous poster using the name “cit2mo” left a series of messages on the gay message board site JustUsBoys on September 21 and 22 that appear to match what is known about Clementi’s dilemma. Yesterday, a lawyer representing JustUsBoys told CNN that cit2mo had indeed connected
