Wow! Six years ago today, I began writing this blog. Ten thousands posts, a thousand “The Best…” lists, and five books later, I’m still at it….I hope I’ve got at least another six years of writing in me….
It’s been quite a ride, and I’m a better teacher, and person, because of it. Thanks to all you readers from whom I’ve learned so much.

Wow! Hace seis años hoy, empecé a escribir este blog. Decenas de miles postes, miles de "the best ..." listas, y cinco libros más tarde, todavía estoy en ello .... espero que tengo por lo menos otros seis años de escribir en mí ....
Ha sido un gran viaje, y yo soy un mejor maestro, y la persona, debido a ella. Gracias a todos ustedes, lectores, de quienes he aprendido mucho.

I am reminded of the statement by Barry Goldwater about gays in the military,
You don't need to be straight to fight and die for your country. You just need to shoot straight.
In a time when our military is finally fully opening up combat positions to females, it is perhaps worthwhile to note the statistics I have cited are from more than half a century ago, and were achieved by this person:
Her name was Lyudmila Pavlichenko, and Smithsonian Magazine features her in this story about her relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt
In the midst of World War II, she became an inspiring figure to many.  Let me share just a bit if I may.

It’s good to see that Dan Montgomery, President of the Illinois Federation of Teachers is speaking tomorrow at4:30 up at Niles North on the pension issue.
I hear he is also going to be speaking the same evening at the forum sponsored by Jobs With Justice out in the western ‘burbs. 6:30 to 8:30 at 374 Commons Drive (I55 and Route 53) in Bolingbrook.
Would that the leadership of the IEA be so visible.

Congratulations to Colin Woodard, recipient of a 2012 George Polk Award for Education Reporting for his special report, "The profit motive behind virtual schools in Maine."

Woodard writes:
Internal K12 Inc. emails obtained last winter by Seminole County Public Schools and forwarded to investigators suggest the company was using uncertified teachers in violation of Florida law, even after being warned by officials not to do so. K12 operates the Seminole Virtual Instruction Program for the district. The content of the emails was confirmed by Seminole County school officials...

awardFebruary is the month of the Grammy Awards for music and the Academy Awards for movies and, now, the Bunkum Awards.
Presented by the National Education Policy Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder, the awards are given for what the presenters say is bad educational research. How bad? Given that a great deal of educational research is bad, the winners have to shock the sensibilities of the awarders.
The awards get their name, Bunkum, from Buncombe County, N.C., where, in 1820, Rep. Felix Walker delivered a long-winded speech that became known for its utter uselessness. The word “bunkum” thereafter referred to long-winded nonsense, the policy center explained.
Following is a list of the winners. You also can watch the awards being announced in a video. Each of the explanations of the winners includes a link to a review by the National Education Policy Center of each of the studies that won a Bunkum.

Is Rhee's Book a Flop?

I know nothing about the book publishing business, so maybe I'm wrong. Maybe a book like Michelle Rhee's Radical needs months to build up buzz and become a best-seller. Maybe her autobiography is a sleeper and will catch fire after a few more weeks.

But right now, Radical looks like a flop.

According to Amazon.com, Radical was released on February 5, 2013, almost three weeks ago. In that time, Rhee has been on what must be any author's dream book tour: The Daily Show, This Week, Charlie Rose, and many other outlets. She's been treated very gently, despite the cheating scandal that surrounds her and hermediocre record running Washington, D. C.'s schools. Given the extent of her book tour and it's fawning nature, you would think that Radical would be flying off of the shelves.

And yet Rhee's book has not cracked the New York Times Best Sellers List. And Amazon, as of today, putsRadical here:


Radical isn't even the number one book under "Educator Biographies and Memoirs." How many books can

Mike Thomas used to be a columnist for the Orlando Sentinel, where he regularly showered former Florida governor Jeb Bush with praise. Now Thomas works for Bush's reformy outlet, the Foundation for Educational Excellence, where he is paid to tut-tut at people for saying things they never actual said.

(How come no one on our side is offering jobs like this? I can misread blog posts with the best of them!)

But Thomas's blog looks like it's going to be about more than just smearing Bush's opponents; it's also going to produce spin when Bush gets caught up in conflicts of interest:
