Feds deny state a No Child Left Behind waiver | EdSource Today:

The formal letter from Washington hasn’t arrived, but the verdict has: The federal Department of Education has turned down California’s application for a waiver from the No Child Left Behind law.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson

“It is disappointing that our state’s request – which enjoyed such strong support from parents, teachers, administrators, and education advocates across California – has apparently been rejected,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said in a press release Friday.
Thirty-three states and the District of Columbia have already received waivers, liberating them from NCLB’s chief demand – 100 percent proficiency of all students in English language arts and  math by 2014 – and the sanctions that come with failing to meet it. These states also now have flexibility to spend a portion of federal Title I dollars that had been restricted to NCLB compliance. An additional 10 states have waiver applications pending.
The rejection of California’s application was not unexpected. Gov. Jerry Brown, Torlakson and the State Board of Education had chafed at some of U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan’s requirements, and had filed a waiver request that ignored them. Among their objections: the requirement of a statewide teacher evaluation system that includes the

CA educators reject NRA call for guns in schools - by Kathryn Baron

California educators and Democratic politicians are rebuking the National Rifle Association for suggesting that more guns in schools would keep students, teachers and staff safer. The NRA broke its silence about the massacre of children and teachers last week at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School, holding a news conference Friday in Washington, D.C. “The only thing that stops a bad...

What Were We Thinking? - Norm in The Wave

Here’s hoping everyone is recovering as best they can. I’m so glad The Wave has come through this. Seeing it out again is a clear sign we are moving towards the new normal.

Monday morning, October 29, at 10:30, I posted a piece on my blog about the education evaluation negotiations and the January deadline imposed by Cuomo and how it might tie into a UFT contract, plus other issues all coming together at the same time. I lightheartedly titled it “The Perfect Storm.”

What was I thinking? We had decided not to leave Rockaway, though when I had looked out the window at around 8AM there was water coming up my bay block street from the ocean. And when I saw my neighbors across the street come racing out of the house around 10AM with a suitcase it got me thinking. Some of my

Weekly Address: The President and First Lady Extend a Holiday Greeting and Thank our Troops for their Service

In this week’s address, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, and thank our brave troops and their families for their service. The President and First Lady ask the American people to visit JoiningForces.gov to find ways to honor and support our veterans and military families, and say that we must all come together, as we always do, to care for each other during this holiday season.

Charter Schools USA Got $6 Million More Than They Should Have During Tony Bennett’s Indiana Tenure

From reporter Dan Goldblatt of Indiana Public News:
A Marion County judge has decided that the Indiana State Board of Education misappropriated several million dollars of funding to charter schools. The money was being withheld from Indianapolis Public Schools.
When private companies took over four Indianapolis Public Schools to become charters, the State Board of Education counted the number of kids enrolled in the takeover schools during the 2011-2012 academic year, the last year IPS was in charge.
When the charter schools took over this year, enrollment in those four schools dropped by almost 50-percent. However, according to a statement from IPS, the state gave the charter schools

A shouting and chanting crowd of hundreds told officials Thursday night exactly what they thought of a Philadelphia School District plan to close 37 schools and change grades and shut programs at dozens more.
"SOS! Save our schools!" hundreds yelled as they marched up North Broad Street toward district headquarters. "Whose city? Our city! Whose schools? Our schools!"
It was a dramatic stand against the planned closings of one in six city schools, announced last week. Closings were not on the agenda of the School Reform Commission's voting meeting, but they quickly became the hot potato of the evening, with students, teachers, parents, and community members demanding answers.
Story continues below.
"How do you sleep?" parent Linda Crowder asked the SRC. "What were you thinking? Or are you thinking?"
No final decisions have been made on which schools will be shut, and the SRC is not scheduled to vote until March.
But new Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. has said that without large-scale closings, the district -

Last week I posted the story of Ames Middle School and the community’s fight to keep it as a neighborhood school.
Local political boss Alderman Roberto Maldonado wanted to turn it into a military school.
Ames was created 15 years ago as a result of community pressure to relieve over-crowding in other Logan Square schools. And while the numbers of students are down from those days, the school is, by all measures, an effective and safe learning environment for young teenagers.
The so-called underutilization of neighborhood schools is a hot topic these days – the latest excuse for school closings. The fact is that the most underutilized schools seem to be surrounded by charters and also seem to
