The Logan Square subway station on Labor Day morning. Red shirts heading down to the CTU rally.
It is a beautiful Fall-like morning in Chicago. A slight chill in the air, but the sky is cloudless and blue.
Last night we sat on the lawn at Ravinia and listened to Yo Yo Ma and The Knights play Schumann. The air was cool and damp last night too. But the sound of Yo You Ma’s cello was magical.
There is a guy on the Logan Square list serve who I have never met. He plays the role of the cranky old man chasing the kids off his lawn.
Yesterday he posted his take on the Chicago teachers contract negotiations:
I get it. To hell with the tax payers. What did the teachers do to earn 16% over
the last four years while our fire & police only got 2% a year? Hold the line

Old school.

K-12 is missing in action at the Democratic National Convention.

If you were watching the convention, even the gavel to gavel coverage on CSPAN, you would be hard pressed to hear anything that referred to the last four years of education policy coming out of the Department of Education. What's At Stake for Chicago Public Educators?

By David Stieber

You have undoubtedly heard the news reports, radio attack ads, CPS representatives, the "CEO" of Chicago Public Schools, and the Mayor saying how teachers are walking out on the students if we strike. Parents, students, residents of this city, as a teacher let me tell you, comments like that rip teachers to our core. As cliché as it sounds teaching is a calling. It's not as if one day we

Why Are Progressives Wrong On Education?

Longtime readers know that Digby, proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, is one of my role models. Aside from being wicked smart, she manages to find just the right mix of snark, wonk, and earnestness in her prose. She's also a shrewd judge of talent: adding David Atkins to her blog is one of the best moves she's ever made. So Digby's endorsement, coupled with Atkins's own volume of work, are more than enough for me to trust his reporting.

Why the prelude? Because Atkins wrote a very important piece about a meeting he and a few other progressive bloggers had at the Democratic National Convention with Howard Dean, the former DNC chairman, and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten. I already wrote about Atkins's insightful observation about the usefulness of narrative in countering the corporate reformy movement; now I want to get to the meat of the meeting.
Howard Dean expressed his support for Randi as the most progressive union leader in the

Does milk still have a place on school menus? The question is provoking debate locally and nationally. And at issue is not just chocolate milk, but plain milk as well.
This week, a Decatur schools committee recommended banning chocolate milk in k-3 and phasing it out for grades 4 and up. The school board did not act on the recommendation but plans to consider further.
The main complaint about chocolate milk is that it contains too much sugar, but defenders say it’s the only milk some kids will drink. Though she didn’t take a position on

Rahm's quickie guide for non-teachers

At Peet's this morning, I'm practically choking on my coffee while reading, "CPS’s How To Guide for workers at strike contingency school" in  the Sun-Times.

The guide is supposed to be a quickie preparation handbook (are you watching, TFA?)  for the gaggle of principals, assistant principals, Central Office Staff and non-CTU employees, as well as yet-to-be-approved scab vendors. and anyone else Brizard can scrape up to man his 144 (don't-call-them-schools) "holding centers". I call them scab schools. CTU Pres. Karen Lewis calls them, "a train wreck" waiting to happen.

Among the suggestions on “how to prepare” for classroom duties:

• “Wear a watch — your room may not have a functioning clock.’’

• Dress comfortably as “many schools are NOT air-conditioned.’’

• “You will need to bring your own breakfast and lunch. Please note that you cannot rely on access to

I missed a subtlety in Leslie Postal’s Orlando Sentinel story last month that StateImpact’s John O’Connor  didn’t. This from Postal’s story about the search for a new commissioner:
Applicants to replace Gerard Robinson, who stepped down after a little more than a year on the job, have until Sept. 27 to get their resumes to the search firm, Ray and Associates, Inc. But board members said they would consider extending the deadline, if needed.
Board member Roberto Martinez said Florida’s top school job requires someone who can navigate the “political process” but what is most needed is a “person with management and executive skills, a professional educator.”
Martinez said Florida has a “very ambitious agenda” for education, shifting to Common Core

Hong Kong Backs Down on ‘Moral Education’ Plan

Protesters gathered to demonstrate against the launch of national education outside government headquarters in Hong Kong on Saturday.

HONG KONG — Faced with tens of thousands of protesters contending that a Beijing-backed plan for “moral and national education” amounted to brainwashing and political indoctrination, Hong Kong’s chief executive backpedaled somewhat on Saturday and revoked a 2015 deadline for every school to start teaching the subject.

But the protesters were not mollified, demanding that the education plan be withdrawn entirely. Crowds of young people in black T-shirts continued to pour into the plaza and streets around the local government’s headquarters on Saturday evening after Leung Chun-ying, the chief executive, offered the compromise.
Mr. Leung said he wanted each school to decide whether to teach the subject in the

I just got a heads-up that the student who’s trying to start a White Student Union at Towson University is planning on bringing a guy named Jared Taylor to campus next month. Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about Taylor:
Taylor believes that white people have their own racial interests, and that it is intellectually valid for them to protect these interests; he sees it as anomalous that whites have allowed people of other ethnicities to

Selling the Soul of Public Education
As we traipse through these weeks of conventioning, I know that the my-parents-showed-me-what-hard-work-means tales are getting a bit old. Still, please indulge me for a couple of paragraphs.
My dad taught for 34 years in inner-city public high schools in Chicago. For much of my childhood, my mom taught elementary school, also in a Chicago public school. They are two of the most hard-working people I’ve ever met, and I will forever be inspired by their capacity for personal sacrifice to serve the common good.
