Squeaky wheel spurs City Hall

The fact that the Worcester Public Schools will be able to hire more teachers and school nurses for the next school year is a textbook example of how the squeaky wheel gets the oil at City Hall.

Make no mistake about it, had it not been for the concerted efforts of the Citywide Parent Planning Advisory Council, concerned parents of school-age children and members of the School Committee, it is very unlikely that the School Department would have an extra nickle for next year.

As part of his fiscal 2013 budget proposal, City Manager Michael V. O’Brien had recommended $284.5 million for the public schools, which was $11.4 million more than the current year’s school budget. Funding for public education was increasing by 4.6 percent, while non-school spending was increasing by a mere 1.2 percent.

Given that, many city councilors did not seem terribly bothered by the proposed funding for education.

But public school advocates were anything but satisfied; they actively lobbied the City Council for more money

The pastor made me do it.
That's what a teenage girl told Will Evans when the California Watch reporter asked her why she was out soliciting donations for a West Oakland church at a BART station at night. She said that if she refused, she would get in trouble.
Evans would see kids asking strangers for money when he took BART home from work.
He smelled a rat and started digging.
What legitimate man of God sends children out into the streets at night in harm's way where they can be robbed and God knows what else to ask for money?
It wasn't fresh ground. Two years ago, a CBS report had raised disturbing questions about St. Andrew Missionary Baptist Church school and its fundraising practices. But nothing ever came of it.
Evans dug deeper. He discovered that the K-12 private school is run by Robert Lacy, a 79-year-old pastor who pleaded guilty to theft in 2007. According to court documents, the good reverend helped himself to his dead father's Social

While teachers unions generally scoff at this sort of sloganeering, most lack any effective strategy of resistance to the “student”-focused, union-busting, scorched-earth privatization pushed by Rhee and her billionaire colleagues. Chicago’s teachers union, the third largest in the country, is a light forward. On Friday, teachers surpassed the 75% quota necessary to authorize a strike, which would take place come the fall if the union decides to move forward with it. More impressive than this figure is the work that made it possible.

Under the Caucus of Rank-and-File Educators (CORE), the CTU boasts an organizing model that cracks into Chicago’s teaching workforce and neighborhoods as doggedly as the city’s Democratic machine. While the city shutters, charterizes, segregates, gentrifies, intimidates, and fires, the union has created a member organizing department where one didn’t exist
