Several hundred people gathered at historic Mother Bethel AME Church on Lombard Street Sunday night to decry plans put forward by the School Reform Commission to close dozens of schools, expand charters, and reorganize the School District into “achievement networks” primarily run by private entities.
A succession of preachers roused the gathering and put public officials on notice that their voices would be heard before any such radical restructuring would be allowed to take place.

April 19, 2012  ::  A quick review of the long and illustrious career of Facts reveals some of the world's most cherished absolutes: Gravity makes things fall down; 2 + 2 = 4; the sky is blue.
But for many, Facts' most memorable moments came in simple day-to-day realities, from a child's certainty of its mother's love to the comforting knowledge that a favorite television show would start promptly at 8 p.m.
Over the centuries, Facts became such a prevalent part of most people's lives that Irish philosopher Edmund Burke once said: "Facts are to the mind what food is to the body."
To the shock of most sentient beings, Facts died Wednesday, April 18, after a long battle for relevancy with the 24-hour news cycle, blogs and the Internet. Though few expected Facts to pull out of its years-long downward spiral, the official cause of death

University of Michigan alumnus Sanjay Gupta returned to Ann Arbor this past weekend at the start of the 2012 commencement season and delivered an uncommonly entertaining speech to more than 45,000 people in the Big House.
Too many commencement speeches are, well, boring — too long, too conventional, utterly humorless. Not Gupta’s.
A neurosurgeon and CNN medical correspondent, Gupta told great stories — including about how his parents remarkably met and about his own stellar career path as he dispensed the requisite advice to more than 10,000 graduating students and their friends and family.

I had been meaning to write this thread for some time now.  It's a worthy example of how Seattle Schools starts off with a good idea but cannot follow-thru with execution.

I will be upfront and say I probably should have done more research so fill in the gaps if you know more.  But the issues are in very sharp focus right now and it is a program that is going to reach a stress level soon.


Background

(I confess I don't know much about foreign languages in SPS before the JSIS was created.  I assume that most of the high schools and middle schools had at least one foreign language for decades.  I am also aware that several elementaries had foreign language instruction either during the school day or after school with the costs being borne by PTAs or other groups.)

That's what I want to tell Governor 1% Cuomo's brother in law, Kenneth Cole, after reading about his teacher-bashing bulletin board the other day. A friend of mine set up a petition to protest this nonsense, while another says we ought not to give him the attention the billboard seems to demand.

It could indeed be that Cuomo's brother in law simply wants attention for his product, and that he hopes this blows up into some controversy. But I wonder how this would look if he pitted one racial or religious group against another, rather than simply pushing the tired motif of teachers vs. students. This is pretty much the standard playbook of "reformers," who trot it out as children first, students first, and Governor 1% calling himself a student lobbyist.

PTA Encourages State and Local Chapters to Adopt National Resolution on High Stakes Testing

PTA’s National Senior Policy analyst, Jacque Chevalier responded to email inquiries this week regarding theNational Resolution of High Stakes Testing, and said the following:
We are sending it out to encourage State and Local PTAs to endorse the Resolution.
NPTA isn’t able to officially endorse the resolution – we are in alignment. It would have to be voted on by membership at our convention and we can’t get that to happen at this point – we are sending it out via social media to encourage state and local PTAs to endorse.”
Chevalier also emphasized that PTA already has a similar position statement that reads as follows:
“PTA opposes the use of a national, mandated, standardized test as the sole criterion for measuring a school’s or student’s progress.
An assessment system should evaluate higher-order skills, including students’ abilities to use
