Went to the Alliance for Education breakfast today. It was a packed house despite the fact that there was another breakfast fund-raiser going on for King County Dems and the Mayor was off making a policing announcement.

Yay to the Ingraham band who showed up (and, poor things, had to stay until the end to play us out).  Yay to Maple Elementary's dragon dancers and spoken word performers (but next time, give the kid doing rap the microphone).

Impressions:
- kind of subdued, almost like people are weary of talking about education
- nice round of applause for Susan Enfield but nothing out of the ordinary despite her departure
- Dr. Enfield called the Alliance "Seattle's local education fund".
- Sara Morris of the Alliance said the Alliance was both "a critic and a friend to the district" and "the independent guardian of funds."  She also spoke of Seattle someday becoming the "envy of the nation."  I wonder how we get

School Board Rejects Latest Adelanto Parent Trigger Petition; Parent Revolution Promises Lawsuit

ADELANTO • The trailblazing effort to force a major overhaul of Desert Trails Elementary by invoking the so-called “Parent Trigger” law failed to advance Wednesday night.
The Desert Trails Parent Union’s petition to reopen Desert Trails as a community charter school fell 20 signatures short of the 321 needed, Superintendent Darin Brawley announced at a special board meeting.
The Adelanto School District Board of Trustees voted 5-0 to reject the petition for failing to include valid parent signatures representing at least 50 percent of students at the school on Bellflower Street.
But the effort looks to be far from over, with a lengthy legal battle looming.
The parent union had already retained the pro-bono services of the Los Angeles law firm Kirkland & 


“Charter School” Suddenly Appears in Adelanto Parent Trigger Petition

Parent Revolution finally got they really wanted in their efforts to flip a public school in California. While the parents who they sold initially just wanted modest changes, a rejection of their signatures gave them the opportunity to get a new petition. This time it suits the folks who pay the salaries of Parent Revolution’s operatives as “charter school” is on the new petition. Writes Teresa Watanabe in theLos Angeles Times:
The petition asks that Desert Trails be transformed into a charter school, but parents reiterated they would prefer that reforms be collectively developed by an independent organization of parents, teachers and district staff.
A key change, parents said, would be the ability to choose their own principal with more flexibility

Defaulting on any form of student loan, whether private or federal, is a nightmare. But when it happens with federal loans, Uncle Sam is merciless. Currently, there are 36 million Americans with federal student loans, and a growing number of these borrowers are struggling or unable to pay their monthly balances. Not surprisingly, the Department of Education reported that default rates have risen at an alarming pace in the past few years.

A special report takes you into the student loan issues facing 3 women.

When it comes to experiencing life with debt, and more specifically, student loan debt, does one’s gender or race really matter? After all, student loan debt and how it affects a person’s life cuts across gender and race lines. (With a few tough love exceptions, student loan debt does not cut across class lines). When analyzing raw statistics that point to a now, full-blown student lending crisis in the U.S. (default rates are on the rise and outstanding student loan debt has hit $1 trillion), the differences between debtors tend to get lost in all those tables, graphs and digits. Of course, information of this sort culled and presented by social scientists, policymakers and economists is critical. Indeed, such data certainly helps us understand the bigger picture on all sorts of issues. However, and in this case, such findings don’t provide us with insights into everyday life as a student loan debtor. So while it might be understood that a debtor is just a debtor, testimonials from indebted individuals offer a more complex narrative about this crippling, societal problem. These personal stories also allow us to understand how student loan debt affects individuals in different ways.

Unfortunately, New Jersey suffers from one of the nation’s largest achievement gaps between rich and poor students. I see this frequently in my manufacturing company in Linden. We have tried to hire production personnel and have been shocked to find that applicants cannot subtract fractions. The problem, 23⁄4 minus 5⁄8 , was answered correctly by only six of 100 applicants, and most had high school diplomas. As a small-business owner, I can tell you we do not have the resources to re-educate employees in the basics.
There are plenty of kids who graduate from New Jersey's schools who can answer this problem if our SAT scores
