Hannah, I can relate to how you might have felt. It must be heartbreaking to have your Dad see you as his adversary.

It is frustrating when there is someone else who seems to be controlling and dictating everything you do. Like you, I wanted to be trusted and empowered to make and be responsible for my own decisions when I was a teen (and now!). OAKLAND -- Members and supporters of the Oakland teachers union picketed outside the Paramount Theatre this week. Michelle Rhee, one of the nation's most prominent school reformers, was about to address a sold-out crowd of 3,000 about the failures of the nation's education system and the importance of effective teachers.

"No Rhee-forms," one of the placards read.

The notion of treating teachers more like private-sector workers -- as Rhee promoted while she was chancellor of Washington, D.C., schools and now, as founder of the StudentsFirst advocacy group -- has gained traction and publicity. But in the Bay Area, with the exception of nonunionized charter schools and a handful of others, it remains mostly hypothetical.

Calls to end the practice of laying off the newest teachers, regardless of other factors, or to offer financial incentives based on performance, rather than years of experience, often are countered by protest, framed by union supporters as attempts to blame teachers and weaken the labor movement.

Teachers want moratorium on layoffs and a new evaluation system

Los Angeles teachers have approved a much-watched initiative that calls for a moratorium on layoffs as well as a new teacher-evaluation system.
Organizers of the initiative, which passed with 56% of the vote, immediately hailed the results as suggesting that teachers were willing to accept student test scores as part of a new evaluation system.
“Teachers will now take the lead on ending the destructive cycle of layoffs and developing a rigorous evaluation system based on multiple measures, including the careful use of student test data,” according to statement released Saturday by the group Teachers for a New Unionism.
The initiative itself does not mention using test data at all.
United Teachers Los Angeles president Warren Fletcher decided to endorse the initiative. No ballot opposition statement was submitted. Fletcher has consistently opposed using student standardized test scores as a

The Los Angeles teachers union has backed off from its claim that teachers transferred from Miramonte Elementary School won’t be allowed to return upon completion of an investigation into alleged child abuse.
The union, United Teachers Los Angeles, had said Thursday that it was planning to file grievances to protect the rights and reputations of teachers who have done nothing wrong.
L.A. schools Supt. John Deasy quickly responded that innocent Miramonte teachers would have the opportunity to return. And the union, for now, has accepted this assurance in an undated statement posted on its website.

Here is a eulogy for a pioneering scientist that says more about the lifelong effects of a dynamic teacher on his students than any “value-added” formula ever could.

The eulogy was delivered by Jeffrey Ravetch, head of the Leonard Wagner Laboratory of Molecular Genetics and Immunology at Rockefeller University in New York, at a memorial service last week for his former teacher and mentor, Norton Zinder, a ground-breaking geneticist and microbiologist. Zinder, who was my brother-in-law’s father, died this month at age 83.

As regular readers know, I’m not a fan of teacher merit pay (see The Best Resources For Learning Why Teacher Merit Pay Is A Bad Idea).

Some school reformers and researchers have suggested that providing merit pay for entire schools is an alternative, though I’m not a supporter of those kinds of group incentives for similar reasons why I’m opposed to individual merit pay.

I asked Daniel Pink, author of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, about his take on group incentives, and he was kind enough to respond (I’ve written a lot about his work).
