Because if you ask the folks at Slate, you'd swear we public school teachers had a quota.

This might be the most irresponsible headline writing I've seen in quite a long time. In response to the terribly disturbing and horrible (as if I needed to clarify that I do indeed find it disturbing and horrible) news out of Los Angeles these past few days, Slate ran a story with the headline "How Many Kids Are Sexually Abused by Their Teachers?" With the subhed: "Probably millions."

I was shocked when I read that headline. That can't possibly be true, I thought. Dear God,

Illinois needs our input on ESEA flexibility waivers NOW

As the first round of ESEA flexibility waivers are about to be announced (Thursday, we hear), the Feb. 21 deadline for the second round – which will include Illinois – is coming up fast.

That’s a pretty short timeline for people to get a clue about something that may lead to major changes in state education policy. (I’ll try to give you the gist of it in a minute.)

In fact, if you want to have any input into our state’s waiver request, you only have until Monday, Feb. 13th, to register for one of two public hearings sponsored by the Illinois PTA, to be held on Feb. 15th in Schaumburg and Feb. 16th in Berwyn (details here and below).

The US Department of Education really wants you to be heard (they say p. 9 and elsewhere). USDE has mandated that applicants “meaningfully engage and solicit input on its request from teachers and their representatives and from other diverse communities, such as students, parents, community-based organizations, civil rights organizations,

Sacramento City Unified School District trustees have approved $28 million in budget cuts that call for hundreds of employee layoffs, increasing class sizes and eliminating sports and extracurricular activities.

While these types of cuts have been met with angry crowds of parents in the past, school district officials and parents say there are fewer people attending public meetings about the cuts.

The reason? Budget burnout.

Sac city schools chief says this year’s budget is worst yet

Say goodbye to school sports, music classes and school-bus transportation, and hello to more crowded classrooms.

At least that’s the scenario facing Sacramento City Unified School District schools. Last week, the school board approved a brutal list of cuts totaling $28 million.

Teachers say the list is at least partly political, an attempt to scare the public and pressure employees to make bigger concessions. They argue that the district still has fat to trim in consultant contracts and other areas. But district officials say the cuts may in fact turn out to be much worse if California voters reject tax measures proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown.

“The upcoming budget year probably will be the worst one we’ve experienced,” said schools Superintendent Jonathan Raymond last week at a public budget workshop held at C.K. McClatchy High School.

The shortfall occurs mostly because state funding for the next budget year is going to be flat under the governor’s budget proposed earlier this year. Federal stimulus money helped the

Writing in State Impact, John O’Connor reminds readers that there’s a clear way to demonstrate why charter schools aren’t being mistreated and don’t deserve the extra money all that hand wringing at Monday’s hearing implied.

Some education advocates dispute that notion, arguing that local money for construction should go toward publicly-owned facilities. Charter school facilities and land are sometimes owned by private charter school boards or a for-profit management company.

In addition, charter schools are not required to meet the same building codes or provide the same programs — such as reading requirements — as traditional district schools. School officials have asked the state legislature to apply the same requirements to district schools as charter schools.
