The education proposals in Bloomberg’s State of the City address are being described as “ambitious” in the New York Times and GothamSchools. Not surprisingly, I see it differently.
First he claimed that “By almost any measure, students are doing better and our school system is heading in the right direction.” Of course that is not the case at all. By most reliable measures, achievement has stagnated and our students are falling further behind their peers in the other large cities.
Not surprisingly, Bloomberg focused in his speech on the controversial factor of teacher “quality.” The first education proposal he mentioned in the speech is to recruit better new teachers by repaying the college loans for those who graduated in the top quartile of their class, giving them an extra $5000 per year for up to five years of teaching. I’m not sure if this means even higher subsidies for TFA’ers without proper training or certification,

ACLU warns Dallas ISD to "tread cautiously" on loosening restrictions to allow graduations in religious facilities

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas is demanding that Dallas ISD reconsider a proposal that would no longer restrict graduations at churches and other religious buildings. Dallas school trustees are likely to discuss the proposal at Thursday's board briefing. It is scheduled for a vote on Jan. 26. The proposed change would eliminate a clause that restricts commencement exercises from being held at churches, synagogues, mosques and other religious buildings and sites without permission of the superintendent -- and only under extenuating circumstances when no other non-religious facility is available. But the ACLU of Texas said it is difficult to understand why DISD is "taking the unusual step of retracting" the current policy, which the group calls a "neutral policy." "DISD should tread cautiously in this area," Lisa Graybill, ACLU of Texas' legal director, warned

I have been deliberately ignoring the 10th painful anniversary of NCLB-S. I appreciate the grisly work of Lisa Guisbond and Monty Neill in unearthing all those dead bodies and in reminding us that those who don't recall the past. . . .

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the civil rights activist is well-known. Dr. King the anti-war, anti-poverty and class liberation activist is often overlooked.

In many classrooms, Dr. King’s legacy is frozen in 1963, with his now ubiquitous “I Have a Dream” speech. Yet attached here is a speech I find almost equally as important.

Exactly one year before his death, Dr. King addressed a gathering of anti-war activists and clergymen at New York’s Riverside Church. He addressed the war in Vietnam, especially answering critics who were confused about his antiwar stance.

Many of these critics had marched with King, in Montgomery, in Washington, in Selma…and now they turn on

Some two decades into the grand national experiment with charter schools, how much do we really know about them? Not all that much. And not nearly as much as we easily could, say researchers from the University of California, San Diego Division of Social Sciences.

Writing in the journal Science, UC San Diego educational economist JuIian Betts and Richard Atkinson, president emeritus of the University of California and former director of the National Science Foundation, find that most studies of charter schools "use unsophisticated methods that tell us little about causal effects."

The Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations, as well as many members of the general public (not to mention the makers of the popular 2010 education documentary "Waiting for Superman") have all embraced charter schools as the saviors of a broken educational system. But does going to a charter school improve student outcomes? We don't really know, argue Atkinson and Betts. Which charter schools, or even types of charter

Some critics of America’s public schools say teachers don’t want to be held accountable for the challenges of struggling schools. Not true. In fact, teachers demand to be held accountable and they’re the first to say, “The status quo must go,” in education. But they want it done, fairly, realistically, and with purpose.

In a recent address to participants in the NEA Priority Schools Campaign forum, Changes, Challenges and Collaboration, NEA President Dennis Van Roekel said, “We need to be dissatisfied with the way things are. It has to gnaw deep down in your gut so hard that you can’t stand it. That you can’t take it for one more day that it stays the way it is. That you not only accept change, you demand change,” said Van Roekel.
