Ready for battle?

There are important opportunities coming up right away to voice your concerns about one of the greatest scourges of public education today: disruptive school closings/interventions.

Beginning this Friday, January 6, and repeating again, same time, same places, on Friday January 20, hearings will be held all over Chicago on the school district’s plans to shut down, turnaround or otherwise intervene in schools.

Then, between Monday, January 23 and Friday, February 3, additional hearings will take place downtown at Chicago Public Schools headquarters.

The full schedule is below. You can read about CPS’s plans and justifications for their actions at each schoolhere.

Launches Green Ribbon Award Program

SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced today that California schools may apply for the inaugural Green Ribbon Award to receive federal recognition as some of the nation's highest-performing green schools.
"California is proud to participate in this new federal program to recognize schools with environmentally sustainable learning spaces that have boosted student performance," said Torlakson. "Not only do green schools save districts money and energy and protect the health of students and staff, but studies also show these learning spaces actually improve academic achievement. This works hand-in-hand with my Schools of the Future initiative to streamline school building regulations in an effort to create jobs, green schools, and give students the opportunity to learn in modern facilities instead of relics of the past."
The U.S. Department of Education unveiled the Green Ribbon Schools award in September. The program recognizes schools that save energy, reduce costs, feature environmentally sustainable learning spaces, protect health, foster wellness, and offer environmental education to boost academic achievement and community engagement. The award is part of a larger U.S. Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about practices proven to result in improved student engagement, academic achievement, graduation rates, and workforce preparedness, as well as a government-wide aim to increase energy independence and economic security.
The California Department of Education (CDE) has collaborated with several state agencies and interested parties since September in developing the Green Ribbon Award application. Applicants will be judged on whether their facilities have a net zero impact on the environment, whether their green facilities have had a positive impact on the health and performance of students and staff, and whether their students are literate on the environment and sustainability. The deadline to apply is February 17, 2012.
The applicants will undergo a rigorous review, then CDE will forward up to four nominees including one private school to the U.S. Department of Education by March 22, 2012, for consideration. The winners are expected to be announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2012. No funding is associated with the award. However, awarded schools will serve as models to emulate around the nation.

New York, NY – On December 28, 2011, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eight Circuit affirmed key aspects of the lower court’s decision in Little Rock School District v. Lorene Joshua.

This long-standing school desegregation case involves key educational equity issues, including: racial disparities in school discipline, student achievement, access to advanced placement and honors curriculum and inequities in school facilities within three Arkansas school districts, the Little Rock School District, the North Little Rock School District and the Pulaski County School District. Each of these districts once illegally segregated students by race and were subjected to intra-district school desegregation orders. LDF represents the original beneficiaries of the case—the class of African-American students and parents now known as the “Joshua Intervenors”.

The case is perhaps best known for its link to the historic 1958 standoff in which then-Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus used National Guard troops to block the entrance of the African-American students known as the “Little Rock Nine” into then all-white Central High School. In 1982, another dimension was added to the multi-district desegregation saga when the Little Rock School District, joined by the Joshua Intervenors, filed a
