      At first the statements might sound innocuous, or even admirable declarations of a renegade and independent spirit:

      I help people when they need it, even when that means risking a confrontation.

      I love being a champion for my ideas, even against others’ opposition.

      I love to challenge the status quo.

      But the Chicago Teachers Union, locked in a bitter battle with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Board of Education over various issues, alleges that administrators want to get would-be teachers’ responses to these statements as a way of testing their feelings about the

      A group of NYC high school activists called The Resistance from The DreamYard A.C.T.I.O.N Project in the Bronx showed up at the People's University teach-in in Washington Sq. Park today. These young people were a big hit at Occupy DOE on the steps of Tweed last week. Go like their FB page now!

      As educators we routinely wonder whether or not the advice that we impart on our students actually has had a positive impact. Sometimes were are given direct feedback, but other times were are left to wonder. During the past couple of weeks we have organized two assemblies where I have educated the entire student body on cyberbullying, as well as digital responsibility and footprints. My goals for the assemblies were for students to fully understand the negative impact and consequences associated with bullying online, the need to advocate for others who are targeted, the importance of demonstrating responsibility

It only makes sense in a world where you accept that schools are like businesses where you get your performance evaluation from your boss.       Our students always do well on the annual state ISAT exams, a week long battery of tests for third, fourth and fifth graders.

      This year 100% of our fourth graders met or exceeded grade level expectations on the reading portion.

      As a staff, nobody gets overly excited by this. We expect that our scores go up some years and down others. We are a small school, so the difference between 90% meeting or exceeding and 100% meeting or exceeding is a couple of students.

      And I’m not about to go into an entire critique of the state test and how it should be used and not used. Not now,

      Research doesn’t back up key ed reforms

      There is no solid evidence supporting many of the positions on teachers and teacher evaluation taken by some school reformers today, according to a new assessment of research on the subject.

      The Education Writers Association released a new brief that draws on more than 40 research studies or research syntheses, as well as interviews with scholars who work in this field.
