    Why, yes, yes it does! Like any invading hoard of nonviolent protesters, the Occupy Wall St. group has to eat. They have several hundred people to feed on a daily basis and being as OWS isn’t conveniently backed by Koch money, it takes some effort to get it done.

    U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan will be in Los Angeles today to announce the results of a yearlong federal investigation into possible civil rights violations of English-language learners and African-American students in LAUSD.

    Duncan will share details of the investigation during today's regularly scheduled meeting of the Los Angeles Unified School District board. Superintendent John Deasy and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are slated to attend the meeting and explain how they intend to fix problems that were discovered through the probe.

    The investigation launched in March 2010 was aimed at determining whether the the nation's second-largest school district was providing English-

    language learners equal access to educational opportunities offered other LAUSD students.

    The probe entailed evaluating how English-learning students were identified, what programs allowed them to


    School board set to consider reviving disbanded panels

    A proposal designed to raise the public's awareness of high-profile issues facing Los Angeles Unified is set to be voted on today by the school board.

    School Board member Bennett Kayser introduced a motion in July to reinstate the board's Budget and Audit Committee, the Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Committee and the Facilities Committee.

    The panels were disbanded two years ago after board President Monica Garcia said were too expensive to operate.

    But Kayser said cutting the committees sent the wrong message to the public.

    Those interested in weighing in on the district's building boom, its budget, curriculum and student assessment now can do so only during a three- minute public comment period at LAUSD board meetings.

    Schools gave students perks based on test scores

    There is, apparently, no end to the way schools can misuse standardized test scores.

    A novel abuse just occurred at two California high school, where students last year were given identification cards and homework planners in one of three colors, based on how well they did on standardized tests.

    According to the Orange County Register, a black ID card — indicating the highest scores — earned a student special privileges and perks, such as free admission to home sporting events at Kennedy High School in La Palma and discounts to school dances and at local businesses, it said. The poor kids with the white cards, indicating the lowest scores, got zilch though and were required to stand in their own line in the cafeteria at lunch. You can’t make up this stuff.

    With applications due in Washington a week from tomorrow, Gov. Jerry Brown still hasn’t decided whether to let California apply for the Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge. But, with Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson four-square behind it, the state Department of Education is preparing an application on the assumption – or at least the hope – that Brown will sign on.

    After noting the refusal to make specific demands, and criticizing Eric Cantor as a hypocrite for his attacks on Occupy Wall Stree while having praised the Tea Partiers, he notes his belief that the protests are occurring at just the right time aimed at precisely the rught target, and may be the start of something "big and important,' and then he offers this paragraph:
    “Economic justice” may mean different things to different people, but it’s not an empty phrase. It captures the sense that somehow, when we weren’t looking, the concept of fairness was deleted from our economic system — and our political lexicon. Economic injustice became the norm.
