    Banned Websites Awareness Week image designed by Kalan Lysenko, New Canaan High School class of 2013More than a decade into the 21st century and the very tools and sites we need to ensure student success in the world are banned and blocked in many school and learning centers. Though banning and blocking is more convenient, it is not what is right when it comes to preparing children, who will need to use and navigate these waters, for success in the 21st century. The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) is bringing awareness to this problem by naming September 28th “Banned Websites Awareness Day.” This serves as an extension of the American Library Association’s long-standing censorship awareness campaign, Banned Books Week, beginning September

    by joint resolution the Congress of the United States adopted a series of 12 proposed Amendments offered by James Madison and sent them to the states for ratification.

    The first of the propose amendments, which would have gradually increased the minimum number of people represented by a House member as the size of the House increased, was never ratified.

    The second, which prohibits raising or lowering the salary of members of Congress until an intervening House election cycle as taken place, was finally ratified in 1992 as the 27th Amendment - unlike nowadays, the proposals approved the Congress had no time limitation for their being approved by the states.

    The other ten thus became Amendments 1-10, commonly known as The Bill of Rights, when finally ratified on December 17, 1791, when Virginia, following the lead in order of NJ, MD, NC, SC, NH, DE, NY, PA, RI & VT (which was formally admitted as a state on March 4) went into affect.

    The beginning words of the Bill of Rights, in the First Amendment, are worth remembering today:

    Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion nor interfering with the free exercise thereof

    It is these words I wish to consider today

    You may have already heard of StoryCorps, the American oral history project on NPR. Two people sit down in a studio and talk, telling stories about their lives, and the people at StoryCorps record and archive the conversation.

    StoryCorps is honing in on lessons about learning with a new project for the academic year, called the National Teachers Initiative. It'll feature conversations with teachers across the country — teachers talking to each other, students interviewing the teachers who changed their lives, and more.

    "I think there is no higher calling than being a public school teacher in this country," StoryCorps founder Dave Isay tells Weekend Edition Sunday host Audie Cornish.

    "Teachers are feeling under attack and underappreciated," Isay says. "We want to do our part over the next year to turn that around."

    Forget what our CEOs with the seven- and eight-figure salaries do or don't do. When it comes to economic success, our fate seems to rest on our five-figure teachers. If they fail to impart the intricacies of algebra and physics and C++, we'll be overtaken by all those ambitious nations coming up behind us, fast.

    It's enough to think we'd have fat bonus checks all written out and ready to shower on the teaching corps' best and brightest. And yet . . .

    In July, all of Michigan’s Republican Senators voted to put a 48-month time limit on public assistance. The same Bill passed the Michigan House on August 24, 2011. If Governor Rick Snyder signs it, on October 1, 2011, an estimated 12,600 families—including 25,000-30,000 children—will lose access to public assistance. RepublicanGovernor Rick Snyder supports the move, and has told the media that the cap on benefits is in the best interests of Michigan, and in the best interests of those being tossed out of the program.

    9/23/2011 6:25:22 PM PDT - Using the experience of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as an example, Los Angeles Unified on Friday launched its fourth annual effort to persuade dropouts to return to school.

    Villaraigosa dropped out of high school but later returned and went on to graduate from UCLA and law school. His first job as a union organizer evolved into a political career.

    "I often say it was Catholic schools that taught me the basics, but it was public schools that gave me a second chance," Villaraigosa said during a news conference at the Santee Educational Complex near downtown Los Angeles.

    Santee and other campuses - including Gardena High and Peary Middle School - served as staging areas for LAUSD, City Year and other groups whose volunteers visited the homes of 22,000 youths who had dropped out of the district.

    At a time when Wake and other counties across the nation are laying off staff and stuffing more children into classrooms, the Tea Party social antiquarians in charge of schools in Wake County are finding millions to follow a pedagogical practice of gender segregation that pre-dates Horace Mann in the middle of the 19th Century. And the cost of busing, which was an unsustainable burden when it came to achieving socioeconomic diversity in Wake County, is just fine for the purposes of segregation and the propagation of sexism:
    RALEIGH – Wake County will have two single-sex schools next year. One Leadership Academy for grades 6 through 12 will be for boys and the other will be for girls.

    The school board agreed to fund the schools Tuesday night. The cost is estimated at $7.9 million

    New statistics were released last week by the U.S. Census Bureau show that the number of Americans living in poverty has reached a 52-year high. This is the backdrop for Economist Paul Krugman's New York Times column this week rejecting claims of "class warfare" by those who refuse to consider even the slightest increase in marginal tax rates for the wealthiest in this country. It is a well worth reading and discussing and includes a couple of significant references to the "Social Contract," which we've been discussing in our government classes for almost two weeks now.
